Are you familiar with split primary palettes? Probably one of my favorite color theory things I've learned ever. They're super useful for being able to mix an incredible range of colors, and especially good for being able to mix ideal secondaries! I don't know what W&N's primaries set is like, but if given the chance to get 6 colors, I think choosing a split primary palette is the way to go! Sorry if you already know what I'm talking about, but a split primary palette is basically where you have a warm and a cool version of each primary color. There's some interesting color theory behind these choices, but I think I'm at risk of being obnoxious by offering it unsolicited lol. So let's leave it there. :D

I love that you did two pieces to fairly test out these paints! I always get in the heaspsace of "one and done" if I'm trying anything new, whether it be a technique or color scheme. I love both pieces, by the way!

The pond painting is so dreamy! The cloud on the left pleases my eyeballs, where one side is all beautifully blended and the other side is nice and crisp ๐Ÿ‘Œ

I really liked the patchiness! Gives it an authentic look. I have some of my own and now iโ€™m excited to actually use them.

I love your in depth review of these paints. I usually use these and have had similar issues to you with the patchiness. This makes me want to try Holbein! Also love that lily pad painting. So beautiful

You can order the single Holbein tubes on the Blick site. Same with Jackson's, Jerry's Artarama, and others. Jerry's Artarama has them in store as well (at least they do at the one near me, so check on their site if they have it in store near you). If you just can't find it in any store near you then order them off their sites! I order all the time and I haven't had any issues yet.๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

I have the same paints, and I use a cadmium red vs Windsor red which is more toned down and the warm colors are much brighter! I think your mixing struggle might be bc of the reds but I could be wrong! Love the paintings :)

We also donโ€™t have a Blick nearby (nearest is 2.5 hrs away) and I go a little feral when we go to see my in-laws and I get to go shopping there in person ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I Florida fan girl when you use reference places/animals/plants from the area. Bok Tower is so beautiful and peaceful, it's definately one of my favorite botanical gardens in the area. I worked with the rare plant conservation manager recently and got a tour of the rare plant green house. They have some amazing plant species and conduct interesting research like the affect of Gopher Tortoise seed digestion on the germination of Ziziphus celata. Nice job capturing the beauty of the gardens; it inspires me to go back and do some art!
