The Hays Code was a censorship code who added restrictions to the content showed on cinema. One of the companies who was affected by this was the animated company Fleischer Studios (the studio behind Betty Boop and the first Popeye cartoons). Their animations used to have adult jokes and dark humor (mainly in the Betty Boop ones). After the Hays Code, the studio had to tone down their animations.
