Trucking with long-haul driver Biggi - What does it take to drive long distances? | DW Documentary

The truck is Brigitte Mosch’s great love. And she has sacrificed a lot for this love. She has been driving the big rigs for more than 30 years.

She is on the road everywhere from Tunisia to Europe’s far north. Female truck drivers are still very much the exception, especially in long-hauling. And Biggi, as her friends call her, has clear views of what makes a real truck driver. By no means can she have long fingernails and only care about her appearance. The 58-year-old has little time for these so-called trucker babes. Brigitte has been divorced twice and says a relationship and long-distance hauling just don't work. Sylvia Wassermann went with her on the road.

Trucker here for 13 years now. All my respect to Biggi. We are half the world away but have the same job. It is not easy but at the same time, very satisfying. I pray for health for you Biggi. Please don't skip doctor time. Ownership and Biggi are spot on 100% right, trucking is not just a job but a vocation. You have to love and enjoy it. Not everyone does, but WE DO.

Excellent report! I have to give her credit how hard she works to earn something to cover the bills and to have some food over the table.

I drove semi trucks otr for 36 years, and It’s a grueling and thankless job. I ended up having a heart attack and had to retire permanently. Truckers are the backbone of the economy and you need to be mentally locked in to do it.

This was such a great documentary to celebrate the work that the transport & logistics industry does for a country. Tough job & not for many, but to go out and see the country is better than sitting in a partitioned desk space. Well done, DW - more of the same, please?

As a short haul commercial driver, I found this totally fascinating! It was such a well done/presented documentary and showed the human side of Biggi's life also besides just hauling down the road. I hope DW brings out more documentaries, 10/10!

What does it take? Everything, it's a job that destroys you and your family for the boss to have a nice house and a few expensive cars, while you get a tiny bit, average 14 hours per day, minimum 12 hours shift, constant stress with traffic, tight places, restrictions, bad planning from the office and so on, it's a job that pays well, but wen you look into how many hours and stress and broken friendships and relationships, it's a life style simple as that.

Go Biggi! Wear steel toed boots! Thanks DW for another excellent documentary. USA also has a "driver shortage," but it really is a retention problem because it is very hard for long-distance drivers, who are treated as independent contractors, to make much more than minimum wage after subtracting expenses and considering total hours.

I use to be a long haul truck driver and traveled all contiguous 48 states. "Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties, above the fruited plain ...from sea the shining sea ...God shed his grace on thee."

I had thought about being a long haul trucker; the Canadian Rockies and snow deterred me from that. Instead, I became a tile setter. October 5th marks my 25th anniversary of working for myself.

Truck driving in Europe looks pretty cool. Beautiful scenery and the cabovers have more room on the inside than I thought. The truck stops look clean too. Definitely would be a nice change of pace to get to drive in Europe for a year or so
