He’s my favourite English king of all time. He was the best version of a king anyone could hope to have.
A victor on the battlefield, a revolutionizer of the army and navy, a bringer of learning, piety, and laws. An improver of the infrastructure, a strengthener, a considerer for the poor and the sick. A fair man, but strict to those who needed it. He was kind and mild mannered, but not weak. He was not a man to be crossed, but no good man would want to.
He was many great things all put into one man. Truly great!

He was what later became known as a “Renaissance man” - a brilliant mind that can be outstanding at many things - both mental and physical. That he was a genius is pretty evident. He had three tools - Brains, brawn, and balls.
Both his brilliance as a general and his great drive to bring learning and culture to his people speak of a generational greatness.
Hence the honorific.

Great work people. You have managed to bring alive and with sound credibility a critical period of history , some great men and the practical accomplishments of a man of faith. How hard it must have been to always threatened by the Vikings and to lose the writing and teaching moments in their families . More please !!

The Saxons cane to England in ships just the same as the ones the Vikings would build 400 years later ...
Everyone seems to think the Vikings invented that type of shop..
The Sutton hoo burial proves the saxons had tjem in 600sd ( Netflix movie called 'the Dig' is about excavating the buried ship)

Whenever I hear that Vikings surrendered, retreated or succumbed to baptism, I'm reminded how history chooses to distort reality. My impression of them has long been that they prefer death over defeat, b/c Valhalla awaits fallen warriors, but it seems they too valued their own lives and recognized that not every conflict ends with a Viking victory. It's such a tempting thing to buy into - the saying, "It's a good day to die." They probably wouldn't have been successful if they took their own lives as something cheap, disposable.

As an American I’m glad to hear King Alfred used inches on his time keeping candles.
