I have watched this movie at least 50 times over the past 14 years and I still ugly cry every single time. I work in senior living and have been fortunate to know several real life Carls and Ellies and hear their life stories and watch all of their little lifelong quirks and routines they have shared together for 60+ years. One couple is in their upper 80's and they have been going for a morning walk together every morning for more than 60 years.❤ One couple I swear literally WAS Carl and Ellie. The man was always the quiet, timid one, and his wife was always so outgoing and silly, loved to laugh and make jokes. She was always right there ready to help with anything, never afraid to get her hands dirty. She died just short of their 74th wedding anniversary and the grief that the man suffered was so heartbreaking. He wrote her a letter every night before going to bed for the year after she died to help process his grief. He compiled it into a book and gave me a copy before he died of COVID after his 100th birthday. It is my prized possession and I HOPE his family has it published someday. No author could write a better love story if they tried. He was active, spry, and sharp as a tack til the very end. I miss them both so much.

The part that really gets me is later in the movie, when Carl is sitting alone in his house that has been transported to Paradise Falls, then picks up his and Ellie's book after having never touched it since Ellie's death.
Carl turns to where there were empty pages reserved for his and Ellie's adventure photos to go for their long-planned trip to Paradise Falls, titled "Stuff I'm Going To Do," only for him to be astonished to see that Ellie had secretly placed all of her own photos of them together over the years, having placed the photos there while she was dying in the hospital.
The final photo that she had placed there was of her and Carl sitting next to each other in their chairs holding hands, with her handwritten note: "Thanks for the adventure - now go have a new one! Love, Ellie."
As if this first sequence weren't enough to wreck me...

One of the saddest parts besides Ellie’s death is when Carl looks at the painting, then at Ellie, and he thinks “oh no, we’ve been planning this adventure ever since we were kids but now we’re getting really old, will this ever happen?”
And when it does actually happen, Ellie’s not there to see it.

1:37 destroys me. When my girl found out she can't have children, it cut her so deep and she felt she failed as a woman. That meditative pose of Ellie's is very real. Shit, how can an animated movie invoke so many feels??
