I met this astonishing song about 35 years ago but then lost it due to lost tape / lack of a CD issues. We've all been there! It shocked me to the core then and it has never lost its power. It brings back all those feeling of powerlessness and angst that I had back in the day. What a powerful song! Mr Costello, thank you so much for a song that put words into my mouth.

Hi Elvis, posted the message below on someone else's presentation, but it didn't feel right not to put it here too.
I don't see any replies explaining abuse interpretation [not something I put forward] so here's an example... "You've had your fun": you have betrayed me; "you don't get well no more": a direct threat; "Your fingernails go dragging down the wall": as part of a act of violence from the singer; "Be careful, darling, you might fall": a trope of fiction at least, is that victims of violence blame it on a fall
I listen though as those last two lines as the singer imagining her doing the deed, not as violence from him [and gloss over the second line].
It is the most powerful dark emotionally driven song I know. It's not just the story. The live-esque production gives it so much edge. The repeating lines drives the obsession theme. And the dissonance at 03:20 is genius relating the torture.
You can say the Fiona Apple version is better sung, but I find it is a fraction of this performance given what that delivers as a cohesive whole.
I think also Elvis did a kinder and better thing here than with [The Police's] "every breath you take" [which "I want you" had been compared to] in not veiling its insidiousness indeed we "see things clear and stark". I doubt many wedding couples have danced to it!

I consider myself in a life long study of yhe break-up song. There are only a couple of songs in same solar system as I Want You, namely: It's Cool, we can be Friends by Bright Eyes; I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry by Hank Williams; Never Talking to you, Husker Du; and I Can't Stand Losing you, The Police. Play them in a row after a break up and then just try to keep living.
