My favorite song of all time! First time I remember ever hearing this song was when I was in the family car. It was playing on a station with the call letters WIXY 1260 AM in Cleveland, Ohio. I was age 5 in 1966, so that means this has been my favorite song for 53 years now! Despite the simpleness of the lyrics, this song still moves me like no other song. I think it definitely 'imprinted' my ideas of what love should be like. Of course the meaning of the song for me has developed and matured considerably since Kindergarten, but I still dig this song just the same.
Now it's been re-released today. The version is with the surviving members of the Beach Boys and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Bravi, Beach Boys and LPhO! Didn't think it was possible to improve upon perfection but it was. Great song has been made even better! Love the lyrics along with the depiction of the perfect Summer Romance. Even though I am admittedly in my 'sunset' years and so those days are behind me, I can almost taste the kiss in the music reminiscing about past summer romances! To re-live such a love story as depicted in the song? Wouldn't it be nice, indeed!

The three bands that really stood the test of time because there are still teens falling in love with their music today are The Beach Boys, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I adore the first two but have never heard a song from The Stones that was 'beautiful' or that they could play and write across many genres and do it properly. Its so great that both America and Britain had this level of talent and that both The Beatles and The Beach Boys changed the entire industry and it was unstoppable. I love searching through songs and finding out why some songs just imprint on your mind and heart and you love them for the rest of your life.
I taught music and guitar for 15 yrs and was into advanced electric guitar playing ect but about 8 yrs ago I lost interest in this aspect and wanted to know from a music theory standpoint why some songs were so beautiful to me. I delved into further music theory and learned more in 6 months than I did for 15+ yrs playing fancy speedy guitar lick with brutal accuracy. The Beatles wrote music to appeal to their fans which sounded simple yet underneath they were very sophisticated advanced musical devices going on. To be short about it to sell you need a great tune...for a great tune you need complex harmony and structure. Complex structure had already been done in dance hall and classical genres and wasn't selling at all anymore so there was a conundrum !! The Beatles genius was to take from the old dance hall and classical and work it into songs that sounded simple and direct. This ability they had was new and had never been done before. They crossed the bridge of the divide and opened up massive possibilities on tap ready to be exploited. To write a love song taking from the old and then making it new and original is an unbelievably difficult task even to this day yet they did this with ease. The Beach boys a vocal harmony group did exactly the same thing and this is why they could write gorgeous melodies that didn't sound old but were fresh and alive and vibrant. Both bands inspired each other and as Brian Wilson said they were competing with each other up a never ending spiral staircase. Thank GOD they were both around at the same time so this would happen. The Stones however...well, I never liked their sound or their singing and never became attached to any song they wrote. I have give them a listen numerous times but I cannot like a song unless it has some magic in there and their rebellious angst never got me either. Sorry if I upset any Stones fans but for me they just copied The Beatles badly 1yr behind for the most part:)
