Today, on the eve of The Beatles' final release Now and Then, I finally discovered this singer, quite by happenstance, via a foto of her and Paul McCartney in 1967 posted on Pinterest. And quit googling around, I came to appreciate her accomplishments. It is a shame that I had never heard of her until now because her family background somewhat mirrors mine. I was born in the US (1st gen) in 1963 (60 yo) and grew up in the middle of Beatlemania. Like her, my father is a Latino immigrant (hers Mexicano--mine Boliviano) who also happened to perform professionally as a musician. My mum is an immigrant from Cardiff, Wales. It was Julie's Welsh and Latino background grabbed my attention right away, and as a musician myself, I was kinda shocked that I had never heard of her before. I can forgive myself because her career mainly happened back home in Britain, so we would not have had much exposure to her. My parents both arrived in the US around 1962 and that was a good 2 years before she reached major success in Britain. C'est la vie... la vida... I am rather enjoying her work through the magic of YouTube!
And it must be said, quoting (paraphrasing?) Branford Marsalis, "We Musicians hate singers, but we LOVE musicians who sing." And Julie Felix mosdef is a musician who sings. What is not to love?

Such a beautiful version of the Ewan MacColl song, which was actually written in 1949 about the town of Salford in Lancashire. I knew the Dubliners did a version around this time but didn't know Julie Felix covered it. File under very special.
