I went to Ravenna for a day as part of a larger trip to Venice and it ended up being the highlight of the entire vacation. The Byzantine mosaics there are absolutely stunning in person and have become some of my favorite pieces of art in the world; I think I sat staring at the ones in the Basilica di San Vitale for over an hour because I was so entranced. They were so beautiful that when I finally saw the famous mosaic ceilings inside the Basilica San Marco in Venice, my first thought was ‘Eh, they’re all right, but they’re no Ravenna mosaics.’ If you can swing it, it is so worth the trip.

The mosaics in Church of San Vitale has always amazed me since I first saw it on a book when I was 10 years old. To see it in person would have been nice, probably.

Those mosaics are so beautiful. I hadn't heard about Ravenna before, but if I ever go to Italy I'd like to visit this city. I don't particularly remember any mosaic in specific that I have seen in person but I do know they were used in many parts in my country.
