Gotta love how this little piece manages to be not only the shortest song in the whole album but one of the most mysterious and unique as well. In manages to say so much in a way unusual to Slowdive's aesthetic sound (that is, the chaotic warmthness of their wall of sound in Souvlaki) with just a... Cello.
I will never forget those cold winter midnights in 2020 during Covid lockdown. I was 15 yo, stressed af because of social isolation and school, just feeling like everything was going to its end and my mind filled with uncertainty... Hearing Pygmalion was like facing your reflection and seeing all of your flaws, but instead of hating yourself for it, it felt like "Hey, you still have time to work it out. I trust in you."
If Souvlaki was the bitterness, confusion and loneliness that followed a break up, Pygmalion was like accepting your own fragility and embracing it: the fact that everyone can fuck it up and everything can be ruined, but if you take responsability and the will to change, nothing will stop you. Souvlaki may be Slowdive's magnum opus. But Pygmalion will forever hold an intimate memory of those difficult times where it teached me (or was it me?) a lesson about humanity.
Pygmalion is proof that Slowdive is more than a shoegaze band and sad songs. Halstead and Co. are one of a kind, really.

Now that's a deep cut. Not heard this track for years. It's short but absolutely gorgeous. What a band! Slowdive forever.
