I'm starting to believe Mourning Sound is in response to Grizzly Bear's Two Weeks. The fast tempo and message of unsustainably living fast and in excess as a point in Mourning Sound (in a very Absurdist way) is in direct contrast and literal mourning to Two Week's cry to slow down, to relax, and to let things be simple sometimes.
Ephemeral in its beauty, and perfect

I made a mistake
I should have never tried
I took the cake
Finished every slice
I moved away
Still playing off the fights
For every day
I share our love delight
I stare at the face
Looking through my eyes
I move at a pace
That I cannot survive
I'm hauling away
I do it all the time
Let love age
And watch it burn out and die
I woke to the sound of dogs
To the sound of distant shots and passing trucks
We woke with the mourning sound
It's the sound of distant shots and passing trucks
We woke with the mourning sound
It's the sound of distant shots and passing trucks
I own the faith
Could never have denied
This isn't a place
Where I can even try
I'm hauling away
I do it all the time
Let love age
And watch it burn out and die
We woke with the mourning sound
It's the sound of distant shots and passing trucks
We woke with the mourning sound
It's the sound of distant shots and passing trucks
We woke with the mourning sound
It's the sound of distant shots and passing trucks

I didn't know people were hating on how poppy this was when it came out...i've always felt their version of chamber pop to be full of otherworldly hooks, only accomplishable by their mastery and musicianship...that's what sets them even further apart from other bands that can tap into what they do with the more psychedelic and experimental/jazzy stretches, they can slip some straight tunes in there...anyway, who cares, why am i writing this...i just freaking love this band and every song they made--special stuff

There are songs that are as close to a time machine as we'll ever get. Songs like this take me back. The song feels like being there, but it's just far enough that you aren't actually there.
