Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils in the upper part of the throat.[1][2] Tonsillitis is a type of pharyngitis that typically comes on fast (rapid onset).[1][8] Symptoms may include sore throat, fever, enlargement of the tonsils, trouble swallowing, and large lymph nodes around the neck.[1][2] Complications include peritonsillar abscess.[1][3]

Tonsillitis is most commonly caused by a viral infection and about 5% to 40% of cases are caused by a bacterial infection.[1][5][6] When caused by the bacterium group A streptococcus, it is referred to as strep throat.[9] Rarely bacteria such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, or Haemophilus influenzae may be the cause.[5] Typically the infection is spread between people through the air.[6] A scoring system, such as the Centor score, may help separate possible causes.[1][5] Confirmation may be by a throat swab or rapid strep test.[1][5]

Treatment efforts involve improving symptoms and decreasing complications.[5] Paracetamol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen may be used to help with pain.[1][5] If strep throat is present the antibiotic penicillin by mouth is generally recommended.[1][5] In those who are allergic to penicillin, cephalosporins or macrolides may be used.[1][5] In children with frequent episodes of tonsillitis, tonsillectomy modestly decreases the risk of future episodes.[10]

About 7.5% of people have a sore throat in any three-month period and 2% of people visit a doctor for tonsillitis each year.[7] It is most common in school-aged children and typically occurs in the colder months of fall and winter.[5][6] The majority of people recover with or without medication.[1][5] In 40% of people, symptoms resolve within three days, and in 80% symptoms resolve within one week, regardless of whether streptococcus is present.[4] Antibiotics decrease symptom duration by approximately 16 hours.[4]

I'm 26 and have tonsilitis since yesterday for the first time in my life. Literally drinking water is so painful that I tear up. And with each sip the pain goes from my throat to the ears. It's like two nails stuck in my throat. Bless the child who has it. I can't even bear it as an adult.

Im 25 and going through this. It's one of those things I would never wish on anyone. This is my 3rd episode within the past 5 months, and I have to frequently call out of work and stay bedridden for days at a time because it's so unbearable. It's really starting to get in the way of me living my best life. I'm a very healthy and active guy. I work out, eat well, no bad habits or anything. Every time I have one of these episodes, my symptoms include swollen painful lymph nodes in my neck, earache, headache, fever, extreme fatigue, loss of appetite (I force myself to eat soup and crackers and drink Pedialyte), weakness, malaise, unusual bad smell from my throat, white patches oozing from my tonsils, horrible sore throat (hurts to swallow) and horrible sleep pattern (hard to stay comfortable). Reading the other comments on here makes me feel glad I'm not the only one going through this, and I hope everyone gets well. If I have another episode in the near future, which I'm sure I probably will, I'm looking to have a tonsillectomy procedure done.

Currently suffering with this right now on day 6. My right tonsil is super swollen and I have horrible ear pain 😭 I finally went to the doctor and they prescribed me amoxicillin. Hoping I feel better soon, and hoping all that is dealing with this pain, feels better too.

I got into hospital 3 weeks ago and the doctor said its tonsillitis, but didnt prescribe me antibiotics. One week off work and I thought it will be gone. I started my first day then and still no improvement. It is 4th week for me with constant dizziness, chest pain, panic attacks. Just finishing my 5 days antibiotics now but I dont see getting any better, to be honest I've never felt that bad in my life

Currently have tonsillitis & I’m 29. My tonsils are covered in white and swollen pretty bad. Fatigue took over me, so I’ve been in the bed for 2 days straight. I’ve been on amoxicillin & had to go back to the doctor because I was super nervous about my tonsils looking the way they do. Doc prescribed me prednisone ( I have asthma so I knew exactly what it was when she told me I was going to be placed on a steroid ) which will help with the inflammation. My glands have been so swollen, swallowing has been sooo hard for me. I can’t wait for this to be over!

I remember getting very very sick as a kid, and it got so much worse because I refused to eat food to have the energy to fight the virus. I ended up with both tonsillitis and bronchitis, and had a severely hard time swallowing food even when I tried my hardest in the end. I'm now really thankful to my parents and my doctor alike since I didn't really understand what I was going through at the time. Whoever else went through something similar, or is going through something, I wish you luck on getting well, and God bless <3

I have been experiencing tonsillitis since I was 7 years old, and now that I am 17, it occurs every 2 or 3 months. I have become so accustomed to it that I no longer let it bother me, to the point where sometimes I don't even remember having it.
