S7E02 (VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED 13+):
Mario Kart 64 was once described as the crown jewel of not just Mario Kart, but kart racing games in general. But almost 30 years later, it has been more openly criticized and SQG is no exception to that rule. What does Mario Kart 64 excell and fail at?

WHAT'S NEXT: I'll be working on the Kingdom Hearts editorial about why KH2's intro was peak. But I doubt it'll be ready to go in two weeks. It'll be a short video. Probably the shortest this season, but I'm hoping it'll be ready by the end of January. I'll begin work on it immediately. The script and audio are already done. AvatarAidan already made a thumbnail for it. And there's not a whole lot to edit, thankfully. Also, thank you to those who are good sports about the game. I myself like Mario Kart 64 despite its issues. I just hope to open a discussion about that game.

Toads turnpike is so much fun i guarantee it inspires drunk driving. I don’t think this game has aged the best but i think it’s charming as hell. Something about it’s environments and goofy 3d character renders is just really charming to me.

I loved Mario Kart 64, but I agree. It really just doesn't hold up well compared to the new mario kart games. But it walked so that the new mario karts could run.

It was a basic racing game that kept getting better and more refined or polished every iteration. That's how technology and ideas work crazy i know. But no one ever talks about the character sprites or the level design it was all about beating the snot out of your little bro in battle mode. If you and your brothers didn't tape cardboard to the crt so you couldn't cheat off each others screen then you've never played mk64

An unintended charm of the 2d racers is that MK64 mods are in abundance of characters. You may not like the look but, I like both 2d and 3d looks

Well I wasn't expecting to be name dropped in this episode lol, but nice to see I had a positive impact on your experience! Also worth noting, the fake item box returned in every subsequent mario kart from 64 through wii, with the only exception being Super Circuit. Interestingly, the item is mostly functional in the code for super circuit with associated sprites but was left on the cutting room floor for whatever reason. Whenever you get around to playing super circuit again, I should not that game has drift boosting too, it's just really hard to tell if it's working lol.

It really could have used an updated and optimized mid-cycle Deluxe version. But NIntendo was woefully understaffed in the N64 era and couldn't get such projects done.

Yet another SQG review with a reference to "I Am the Walrus." If I had a nickel for each time there was one, I would not be able to afford much with it, but I will still have a few nickels.

I was surprised to learn a while back that F-Zero X remade MK64's Rainbow Road for the unlockable Joker Cup. It's... actually one of the better tracks in the game. The hazards it adds, the lack of guard rails, and F-Zero X's boost system make it a better F-Zero track than a Mario Kart track.

I loved this game as a kid, but not so much now. I do still think the battle mode's rather good and some tracks stand out as really solid, but there's too many shitty tracks and a notable lack of polish in some areas. It's better than the SNES game and Super Circuit, but that’s about it. Really solid review

When doing a Top Favourite Games list/s collab [and not just with YTubers but a variety of people outside it, though the sample could only be so big], Mario Kart 64 came out on top surprisingly. I think it's due to nostalgia, because the game does mostly not hold up as shown here. However, it's the first N64 game I ever played, so it's at least a little special.

TBH, the vast majority of N64 games have not aged well at all.
