It could be said that, with the passing of Ivry Gitlis in 2020, the musical world lost one of its most unique virtuosi. The peerless Israeli violinist graced the stages of Verbier several times throughout his distinctive career. Gitlis's unforgettable 2011 renditions of several treasured showpieces - together with pianists Khatia Buniatishvili and Martha Argerich - quite possibly marked one of his last public performances. These magical moments, together with several other wonderful performances, are all featured in "Ivry Gitlis in Verbier," a Verbier Festival Gold tribute album to one of classical music's true mavericks.

Gitlis broke all the rules of violin playing to achieve the effect and interpretation he desired. Tempo was not followed. Bowing was all over the fingerboard. He tried to make the piece sound like an old man talking his heart out, and he succeeded. No one plays this piece like Glitis did.
Buniatishvili was a big beauty, but perhaps she’s too used to being a soloist and wasn’t quite sensitive enough in accompanying Glitis’ unusual interpretation of this piece.
