i was 14 when this came out and i hated the line 'you're only ever who you were' because it made me feel like i would be trapped as the person i was forever. i'm 25 now and take more comfort in that line because i interpret it as meaning that even if you lose your way (i.e. by trying to be 'popular' or more simply what you are not), you will always come back to yourself. self-acceptance is the only way through, boys
