I dont think the song is pertaining to an another person but it's talking about how you take care of yourself like it is someone else is suffering from a certain pain.
That is why she stated as "we slow dance" because you are actually comforting yourself from the pain you felt. That is why stranger would only see is one girl swaying alone.

i love this song. its one of my favorites songs ever. i love how the lyrics are raw and honest, i love the piano, i love Lorde's voice and i love how much its accurate too me. sometimes i feel really down cause i think im a liabillity and no one likes me, just tolerate me. but when i feel like this i listen this song and it remember me that i have myself and i need to love myself before someone loves me.
i guess i need to say thank you to Lorde. this is such a masterpiece. its way better than all comercial songs that dont mean nothing and are mades just to sell.
