The thing that irks me about people defending Black Templar primaris is that they always say things like "they're just being pragmatic." And it's like, do even know why they're named Templars? They're insane religious zealots. 'Pragmatic' is the absolute last word you could use to describe them (well, aside from atheistic, obviously). They're the guys that will choose death over a tactical retreat. They'd choose oblivion over a temporary alliance with eldar. If their chapter was on the verge of extinction they would spit in the faces of the Custodes rather than accept their "gift" of primaris created by a literal heretic tech priest. To them accepting primaris would be the same as accepting the gifts of a chaos god. They are the living embodiment of "death before dishonor." Even if there was just one Templar left in the entire Imperium he would wage a one man Crusade against the usurper Guilliman and his abominations. You want pragmatism? Go check out the Tau. They'll adopt any new technology, even abominable intelligence. You want Templars? Then to quote the 3rd edition rulebook intro "Forget the power of technology, science and common humanity. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for there is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting gods." The Black Templars are the literal poster children (being the focus of some of the most iconic 40k artwork) of the stagnation and religious fanaticism of the Imperium and it's mind boggling that anyone at GW or in the fanbase would forget this for even a second.
As for why anyone would want to worship the evil gods of chaos... is this a joke? The chaos gods are nothing more than natural inclinations taken to excess. Khorne: aggression, violence and bloodshed are unavoidable aspects of life. Obviously there would be those who embrace it and take it too far (like super soldiers created to do nothing but fight). Nurgle: Bug chasers are already a thing. Some people are weird and want to get sick. Other people are just nihilists who accept that life sucks then you die. They aren't looking at disease riddled walking corpses and saying "yup, that's the life for me." And others are just people who are living under terrible conditions and just want the pain to go away. Nurgle worshippers are just what you get when people are either desperate or embrace the inevitable a little too hard. Slaanesh: Do we even need to address this? Everyone enjoys physical sensations. Drug addicts are a huge problem even now. Adrenaline junkies are a thing. Everyone enjoys sex. Hedonism and debauchery are one of humanity's longest standing societal problems. If the chaos gods existed in our universe then Earth would be overrun with slaaneshii cultists. And Tzeentch: Who among the poverty stricken masses wouldn't want magic powers and the ability to change their reality? Not to mention that humanity generally has a fondness for clever plots and schemes. It's why soap operas are a thing and why people debate the lore and writing of fictional universes. The point is that no one is looking at the ultimate outcome of worshipping chaos - the mountains of skulls, hordes of rotting corpses, whatever slaanesh has going on or the madness of tzeentch - and says yes, this is what I want. People just look at the immediate benefits of the faith and don't worry about the final outcome. That's how temptation and damnation work.
Shit I wrote a lot. tl;dr - Templars: suffer not the heretic. Chaos: "just the tip" slippery slope.

I absolutely loved these books... Watchers and Vaults both show how divided the Imperium really is.
And, thank you very much for having this talk. I gave difficulty talking lore w my ppl as well. I've read EVERY Heresy book and many of the short stories. I've read a lot of the older omnibus over and over, and I hungrily devour every new book I can get... when you get this deep, few can discuss it with you and sadly, and I try not to be a spoiler.... so a
DIFFICULT position to be in where you can't talk w anybody about what you love the most

The Imperium is peak humanity. Its own worst enemy as always. As far as the Primarchs go, I think Angron recognized more than most that they were simply tools and that, along with how he was taken was at the root of his resentment, the depth of his hatred of his own Legion, and his willing embrace of what Khorne offered.
The Emperor is an immortal and to try to put yourself in the mindset of a 48000 plus year old being, his motivations and wishes is just impossible. Even for Primarchs. What if the Emperor has always been insane? Or at least insane as someone with human perception may see it. This is the greatest shared universe ever written.

The topic of the Imperial Truth, the emperor was OK with the Machine Cult expanding and unifying into the leadership of Mars. He put a priest on the War Council since the beginning of the Imperium. Since the creation of the Two headed eagle. And when the Martian Civil war happened, the Emperor's proxies didn't brought the "radical scientists", he brought to Terra another religious fanatic, Zagreous Kane.

There's a problem with people's understanding of Atheism in this context. The Emperor believes in the Chaos Gods, he doesn't not worship them. He wants to destroy them. That's a whole hell of a world different from idiotically not believing in them after he stole power from them and seen the downfall of Humanity

Well, they say "there's no atheists in foxholes", and 40K is basically one gigantic foxhole, give or take. The Tau are like communists, but their religion is basically the "greater good". Necrons shattered their gods, but it's not like they don't believe in the c'tan. Druchari kinda ditched their original gods, cuz they mostly got eaten, but they all believe in and fear She Who Thrusts ( my autocorrect changed "thirsts" to "thrusts". I'm gonna leave it.)

Burn the mutant.
Burn the witch.
Burn the heretic!
BURN the Primaris!
😬🔥
"But we won't talk about those books."
😑Thanks ABP. I was just leaning back taking that next to last drag on a fine cigarette that was instantly launched across the room and I was incapable of getting to it before it melted a bit of fibers because of my laughing and choking at the same time.😂

I didnt like the primaris before and I still dont really like them now, but the deepening of the lore finally showing all the reactions that shouldve been shown from the start have gone a long way toward making me ok with them. Stuff like the dark angels deliberately lying to and spying on the primaris, the black templar outright attacking them, the high lords rebelling, the original scythes of the emperor deciding to die with honor before they accept the new primaris, the flesh tearers not tristing that the primaris have fixed their flaw, thats stuff that makes sense and adds a lot of depth to the universe. Much more on point than seeing white dwarf articles with primaris as sword brethren in the black templar or the dark angels upper echelons with an "oh yeah guys there were 0 issues, it went great."
It should have been like that from the start, but at least theyre fixing it. I gave a couple of the newer novels a try and was glad I did. I like the angle theyre taking with the original batch of primaris not recognizing the imperium at all as well.
If theyd just stop converting all these chapter masters to primaris with that insanely risky rubicon primaris BS I think Id be ok with it overall. It makes 0 sense to me that chapters would allow someone like Helbrecht or Mephiston to take part in a medical procedure with a 1/3 survival rate, much less the fact they cant ride in a friggin land raider after theyve done so.

@ABORDER PRINCE You should read Justin D Hill's Cadian series to get up to speed with what is going on with the Cadians. Their was a lot of internal and external divisions over the place of the Cadians with other IG Reg trying to replace them as the go to Reg. It's a very good series.
