This week welcome to the show Jason Fung. He is a Toronto based nephrologist. He completed medical school and internal medicine at the University of Toronto before finishing his nephrology fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai hospital. He joined Scarborough General Hospital in 2001 where he continues to practice.

Questions we ask in this episode:

Fasting can be intimidating and scary. ie: I will starve, waste-away and lose my muscle. Should we be fearful?

Is fasting for everyone?

The weight loss industry tells us to eat less calories, but snack between meals. Won’t fasting put us into starvation mode?

Does fasting give us a license to eat whatever we want when we are not fasting?

Can fasting benefit athletes and how would they apply it?

I told my crossfit trainer I lost 30lbs doing keto and IF. His response, "who'd have thought the key to weight loss was not eating?"

I want to thank you Dr. Jason Fung. My Sister-in-law, who is a doctor in Chattanooga, TN, turned me on to you. I'm a diabetic who has suffered heart decease, kidney disease, and now several amputations. Today I am off all my medications...Thanks for your straight forward, no-non seance approach tot he truth.

This video is a game changer for me. Thank you. I am in day 4 of a 7 day fast. It is not fun nor easy. I am a sugar addict. I take this as seriously as an alcoholic or drug addict. Unfortunately my addiction is socially acceptable. I am so blessed by Men and Woman who are guiding me through my journey of "getting clean an sober". God is good!

People think they're starving if they miss one meal. We're conditioned to believe that we have to eat constantly. I love water fasting. Nothing makes me feel better.

I am a medical doctor. I have worked 40 years in General Practice and Addiction Medicine. Now in the semi-retirement phase of my career I worked a 6 month Locum with a First Nation population. I saw the effects of type 2 diabetes devastate their community. Modified fasting could revolutionize the treatment of these unfortunate people suffering a dietary disease. Western medication did nothing to prevent rapid deterioration. Spread the word.

What I love about Dr. Fung is that he tells us his information patiently and thoroughly. I've listened to him since 2016 and his answers are repetitive, but he never shortcuts or answers briefly when he could. He gives historical background, research references, clinical references, scientific information etc. and includes his sense of humor to bring his point home. He wants people to truly understand and learn. He's passionate about his topic beyond money. From one teacher to another, bravo!

There are clinics in Russia where the treatment for illness is fasting for four weeks or more. It is actually a prescribed treatment.

I was a really fat kid from the age of 8. I was motivated to lose weight when I was 15. I started eating 1 meal a day and IT WORKED!! That was 50 years ago. I wish Dr. Fung was around at that time to assure me that fasting was ok as after I lost weight I started eating 3 meals a day and I got fat again.....for 50 years. I have now been on diabetic medication for 4 years and I now know I can deal with the obesity and the metformin. Thank you sir for stepping up and sharing your knowledge and generosity. I am starting a 36 hour fast TODAY and will only eating once every 24 hours from now on.

The most motivating point he makes in his book on FASTING, is that you just have to do NOTHING. Regain your health and lose weight, by doing less. No crazy cooking, no endless exercise, no drugs. Stop eating and your body RESETS. If you begin a fasting program, you get all the results you want, and you just have to do nothing .

Intermittent fasting is the best thing I have ever introduced into my life. There is no way I will ever go back to eating 3 meals a day. I have so much more energy and mental clarity now that I am eating one evening meal a day. It takes about 30 days to adjust, but man the amount of drive and energy I have now is profound!!

It's a lot easier for me not to eat than eat a little. Update: Holy cow! 1.6k likes! Just noticed 2 years after my original comment was posted. Lolz. Will try to respond.

I lost 20 lbs my first 4 weeks of keto, assumed about half was water weight. Whatever it was, it never came back.
