I'm an Afghan and have been watching hindi movies since my childhood in late early 80s. I started watching malayalam movies in 1990 films like His Highness Abdullah, Spadikam, Bharathan, and many more. Malayalam cinema even back in the 90s was ahead of its time. It should not be called regional cinema but rather international cinema. That's how great their movies are. They have great screenwriters , directors and musicians.
