It’s good whenever adam is being super positive in a review and you can hear the joy in his voice talking about his favorite bits from the show

Love that the main characters from the game got to play a role in the show. Joel played James, Ellie played Ellie’s mom, Marlene played Marlene, Abby played no-name nurse, and this one took me a while to find out but Tommy played the man with the beautiful beard who got domed by the big zomboy. Loved it

Speaking of brokeback mountain, Gustavo Santaolalla (composer for tlou) won an Oscar for his score on that movie.

Lmao it's so funny when you're looking up directors of episodes and shit but you just keep calling Frank's actor the skinny guy

Something I felt was rushed in the final episode more than Joel's killing spree was when they get knocked out and taken by the fireflies. I remember when you come upon that subway tunnel that's rushing with water in the game, I got a big sense of dread knowing that Ellie was gonna fall in. I was just waiting for it to happen with every jump. Then the whole set-piece with the subway car and she jumps down to rescue you and the huge sense of panic when you both get submerged and you see her body motionless in the water and you need to swim to her. Joel dragging her out of the water and pleading and ignoring the fireflies that come up to him because Ellie isn't breathing. All of that was skipped in the show for a super unclimactic scene of the fireflies throwing a flashbang at them. I liked the addition of them opening up to each other and us learning about Joel's attempted suicide, but holly hell I think them skipping the whole water set piece was such a disappointment.

My biggest complaint about the show is that I think it should have been longer, 12 episodes would have fit the story better in my opinion, with the 9 we got it feels like the story gets too compact at the end and the show never really show the moment when Joel really starts to care for Ellie, it just happens out of the blue.

You can tell Adam is into movies more than videogames because he thinks videogames that are more like movies are better than videogames that are more like videogames.

I had never considered Nick Offerman as a good actor before this show. I've always seen him in sitcoms where he is just himself but in this show my mind was blown by the vulnerability he showed. Would love to see him get more roles where he can actually shine like this

I found that Tess and Joel arriving to find that Robert was already dead - in the first episode kinda robbed Tess of a bit of ruthlessness - how she shot Robert in the face with no hesitation or emotion in the game...But in the Movie she just tells Ellie "we're bad people" kinda didn't feel like it hit in the same way - I didn't buy it as much. I dunno if you felt the same way?

I love how at the end of the first episode Joel picks up the soldier's weapon. Just because in the videogame you wouldn't expect to obtain such strong gun right at the beginning, but it's a TV show, so it's more realistic this way

One tiny nitpick, Adam. Dogs can growl without "looking like" they're growling. Otherwise, FANTASTIC review. Love 'em.

Episode 3 is the best isolated episode of television in awhile. The writing, Nick Offerman, and gorgeous way they ended on the curtains like the game's menu screen.

Left Behind in the game had context behind it, at least. You were playing Ellie's flashbacks of her initial infection, but also her in the between of Joel falling off the horse and suddenly being in the suburb. There was a duality to her trying to save Joel, a person she loved, and her thinking back to the last person she loved, although a bit differently, and the fact that she failed to protect them. In the show, we didn't really get that dynamic.

Honestly, my biggest criticism of episode 3 has more to do with the fact that it ultimately didn't add much to the overall plot except some characterization. I think that was the issue with some later episodes, where some of the stuff we had earlier didn't amount to much of anything. Like, thematically, Bill's guardedness and his opening up to live was something that could be mirrored to Joel's character arc, but the series goes in a different direction to explore the "dark side" of love. I think the issue I had is that there are some great scenes that are well shot and acted, but the show seems to have a balancing issue with its plot and its characterization. Ellie's flashback episode gave us a fair bit of context as to who she is, but I feel it could have been shortened and allowed for either development of other aspects of the world or story. Same for this episode. Though to be fair, I'm not sure how I would do it differently as I also tend to struggle with characterization and plot progression at times.

I love hearing how much you loved episode 3 bc I remember feeling floored by it when I first saw it. I watched it twice in a row it was so good. The performances were just so moving

I think that show had a strong start, but as it went, I would catch myself often comparing it to the game (which simply did most of the things better). It also took me some time to get used to this version of Ellie. All in all, I feel I would have enjoyed the show better if I didn't play the game, because I was really having trouble disconnecting one from another.
