Sing from Diaphragm? Myth Busted - Watch Now! | #DrDan 🎀

Dr Dan discusses the common misconception of singing from the diaphragm and explains that although the diaphragm is a large, dome-shaped muscle that plays a role in breathing, it is not a muscle over which most people have direct conscious control.

Instead, singers should focus on managing diaphragmatic movements through sensations in the abdomen and thorax during breathing. Contrary to popular belief, it is anatomically impossible to sing from the diaphragm, as it is passive during exhalation. Dr Dan emphasises that singers should recognise that they sing with their whole body, not just the diaphragm, and offers guidance on breath management exercises for better singing.

With my singing students, I mention to them "watch a new born baby breathe, their tummy goes out on inhale...... and in on exhale. That's the way we are born."

Finally! Someone's said it! Thank you, Dr Dan! With so many people, especially my choir teacher/supervisor from high school & college, telling others to sing that way, it makes me wonder if they even knew what & where the diaphragm was. They always made it sound like the diaphragm was a set of speakers and that's where you're supposed to speak/sing from.

Thank you very much, Dr Dan, for this video! Could you, please, give me some advice on one specific issue. I am a tall man in my forties. I'm not too large, but also not slim for sure) And I have funnel-shaped chest. And my lungs are kind of compressed or squeezed by the structure of my chest anatomy. Which type of breathing could you recommend me for singing: belly breath, rib cage breath or the combination of both?

I’ve always had this issue with breathing because all I’ve ever been told is β€œuse your diaphragm” so I’d be squeezing when I went to sing. Thank you for this video because it never worked. Now I know why and how to fix it. Excited to learn more. Thank you!

I recommend making a reaction to one of the best vocalists in the world. Meet Diana Ankudinova! Diana has the title - Queen of Goosebumps. Challenge yourself, can you resist the charm of her voice? One of the last comments about Diana's voice: Pffff.... her voice is really very special, unclassifiable, atypical, out of the ordinary... πŸ’– 1) super unique voice (dramatic contralto with polyphonic overtones); 2) the most complex vocal techniques, a bewitching voice; 3) Diana sings in 6 languages : English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Arabic and any musical genre; 4) incredible charisma, artistry and living of any song; 5) a vocal range of 4 octaves; 6) a large army of fans around the world; 7) an independent artist, without producers and labels; 8) more than 18 thousand reactions (all collected in my playlists). 17 reactions received between 1 and 3.7 million views. The incredible fate of a girl found with a broken collarbone at a bus stop and ended up in an orphanage.
