Rattlesnake Round-Up in Freer, TX is an annual event you won’t want to miss. So slither down to Freer which is home to the world’s largest rattlesnake round-up event as far as I know. It’s an annual event that occurs generally at the end of April. It’s really a festival with bands, entertainment and of course, rattlesnake exhibits and live performances.

Freer is south of Tilden, TX about 60 miles. If you’ve been watching Wide Open, you know where Tilden is. It’s south of San Antonio about 75 miles. The Tilden area and the Freer area are known for excellent white tail deer hunting.

On this episode my great friends Tim Teal and Fred Kirby loaded up the truck and headed to Freer to film the professional rattle snake handlers. We actually went and caught some snakes and then we skinned them, cut them up with radial arm saw, fried ‘em and ate ‘em. It was pretty cool walking in the woods knowing there were lots of snakes in there.

You wonder what rattlesnake tastes like? You got it - it tastes like chicken. We also got a chance to meet Lil’ Mr. Freer, Lil’ Miss. Freer and Miss. Freer. Those are the winners of the Rattlesnake Round-up Pageant. It’s a big deal - the festival has over a hundred people every year and it’s really a big party. Who can say no to a great party? Especially if you throw in rattlesnakes. Don’t try catching rattlesnakes yourselves, these rattlesnake handlers are professionals. And they know what they’re doing.
