I'd like to believe Odin deliberately sent the Valkyries to their deaths. They must have been part if his past campaigns, and were thus, witnesses to Asgard's dark history. Odin was banking on Hela to massacre the Valkyries. He'd then swoop in to banish her.
Still, it's a shame. Good soldiers dying for nothing.

It interesting to notice that when Loki realizes she is a Valkyrie, he switches from killing to "weak". So positioning himself in a position where he could see her memories.

When you stop and think about it, the MCU version of Valkyrie is actually a good example of PTSD; she watched all of her comrades brutally massacred and felt so much anger and shame over the whole thing that she abandoned everything which reminded her of her old life, adopting a materialistic and cynical mindset to prevent old wounds from reopening. The best part is that even after Thor changes her mind and she becomes a champion of the Asgardians once again, she still retains some of this attitude, symbolizing that such trauma doesnât really go away (also, Thanos killing half of her people wouldnât have helped, either).
