Hello and welcome to this weird crevasse of the internet where we get really excited about music (particularly Taylor Swift) and break down our favourite albums and songs. Our names are Bonny and Emily, and our aim with these videos is to share our love for music and also share context and understanding around the songs, by highlighting breaking down the lyrics, melodies and production. We are so happy to have created this little community that is just as unhinged as us when it comes to music

I was fathoming earlier today that the opposite of war is peace and I’m so unwell at that implication. 😿

also, “the monsters turned out to be just trees” in out of the woods connects back to this theme of realizing you create problems in your relationships
.as an anxiety girl all these songs are a personal attack

i also want to add that the very first line of the great war says “my knuckles were bruised like violets” and in afterglow she literally sings, “fighting with a true love is boxing with no gloves” THE PARALLELS!!!! i love both songs ♄

When they talked about the “diesel is desire
.” line and said that she was saying that she is a risk all I could hear was, “I was a flight risk, with the fear of falling”
.like she has been singing about this feeling for a long time❀

Also with the history metaphor, “The Great War” was supposed to be the worst one the world had ever seen
.until one came along later that was even worse. Kind of like how their relationship made it through tough times until something came along that was too much for them to get through 😭

In my head “there’s no morning glory. It was war it wasn’t fair” meant that in the end of the war there are no winners. Just people really hurt. So the morning glory after the battle wouldn’t be real because everybody was hurt from this.

Her fear of abandonment - "Who could ever leave me darling? But who could stay?" Not only because of no one wanting to play with her as a kid but also all of her romantic relationships that didn't work out (not a criticism, just something that probably is triggering for her). I so relate to this!

Truly do believe this might be her best metaphor song ever — the fact that the war metaphor remains within the lyrics the entire song is so beyond concerning I don’t understand how she does it. It’s literally brain-breaking

I find it fascinating how Taylor uses The Great War to explain her triggers and alludes to PTSD which in itself wasn't identified as a medical event until after the First World War as so many soldiers suffered from it after the trauma of the war. Great video, girls!

“I drew curtains closed” reminds me of the foreword for Lover, where she says “
finally finding a friend, and opening the curtains to see the clearest, brightest daylight after the darkest night.” đŸ„ș

Also "tears on the letter" reminds me of when the soldiers in the Great War would write letters to their families and vice versa, in order to communicate during such a hard time. The "tears" here represent the sadness that Taylor felt, a sort of confession to the other person in the song / a way to tell him what is happening in her mind.

The way I interpret “my hand was the one you reached for all throughout the Great War” as like they’re on the same side fighting the war in the trenches and her “anti-hero” or the “her” referenced is the one they’re at war with, they’re actually on the same side the whole time

and also the lyric in peace: “it’s like i’m waisting your honor”, really ties in perfectly with “looked up at me with honor and truth”

I always interpreted "somewhere in the haze" linking to "flashes of the battle come back to me in a blur" As in somewhere in the thick of the battle, it's all hazy and confusing and that's why it's just a sense of betrayal - there's nothing to really base the sense on because it's all such a blur

All of these songs; Peace, Afterglow, the Archer, and The Great War are all of my favorite songs and then I realized that they all connect to one of my fave OG songs...MIne. Like... "I was a flight risk with a fear of falling"!?!? and I know that Mine has a more optimistic ending but some of the lyrics are about being afraid her partner is going to leave !! And the music video w/ the fight where she thinks it's all over but he comforts her and tells her it's going to be okay!! I'm freaking out all of my favorite songs make so much sense now b/c of yall!! I can't believe that she has had this fear appear in a Speak Now song !!! 😭THE FATHOMING UGH love yall and this community !!
