This reminds me of the John Brown isekai where he gets teleported to an anime world and has to free all the slaves there. I haven't read it but it sounds like a great concept.

There's a whole genre of modern trashy Russian literature called "попаданцы" ("accidentally-ended-up-ers") that more closely match this version of issekai. It's usually about middle-aged ultranationalistic dudes with military background accidentally ending up in important periods of Russian history and changing them "for the better". I.e. there are the historic events that the ultranationalists are still salty about, see them as humiliating, and really want to see them play out differently, and here they get to experience this fantasy.

Everybody knows that the greatest Isekai ever filmed was the black Knight starring Martin Lawrence and I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL!!!

Note about Alexandre Dumas' dad: he was Haitian so not only was he from a poor background and worked his way up to general under Napoleon and one of the great powerful people in France, but he was also black and descended from slaves. It was repeatedly brought up during Dumas' lifetime, as you can expect he clashes with a lot of people over his heritage. A lot of historians concur his public experiences of being mixed race in the 1800s coloured the anti aristocrat vibes in his works

22:17. he also loaned Tesla money - thinking that he could help him out bring society forward, but also said that some of Tesla's ideas - "the world is not yet ready, maybe they will be ready the next time Halley's comet comes around"

you should read edison conquest of mars, wich is basically an fanfic of war of the worlds about edison fighting agaisn't the martians, it has a lot of alt-hist and was published across the same year as war of the worlds. altough by some reason the martians are giants humanoids.

Cavalry charges getting shredded by Gatling guns had already happened when Twain wrote this, in the Civil War. Cavalry was mostly gone by WW1.

You saying that talking about this book for its themes and messages really speaks to me as someone who studied literature in college. I love your work and would be excited to see some discussions like this one sprinkled in.

I’d be really interested in you reviewing 1632, my dad was a huge fan of the series and I read it a little when I was younger. Couldn’t help but think of it this whole video, and hearing you mention it at the end made me eager!

My dad read this with me when I was like eight. I loved it so much and I'd tell people at school about it but they just didn't care...
