Why Mānuka Honey Is So Expensive | So Expensive

Mānuka honey known for being is earthier, richer, and more viscous than many other honeys. It comes from the nectar of the flower of Leptospermum scoparium — also known as Manuka, which is only native to New Zealand. Mānuka, in fact, is a Maori word.

"The plant itself is very rare. It's difficult to harvest because the flower is only open for 12 days, and sometimes we have to use helicopters to collect this honey." John Rawcliffe from the Mānuka Factor Honey Association told Business Insider.

Although mānuka bushes can also be found in Australia, New Zealand accounts for almost all the world's production, with exports worth 300 million NZ dollars ($204m) and expected to rise to 1.2 billion NZ ($800m) by 2028.

Watch the video to find out what's so special about it and why it costs so much.

ALL honey has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Manuka honey is just the Gucci or Rolex of the honey business.

I use honey only from local hives because the health benefits are better, and it helps the smaller beekeepers. However, I have seen Manuka honey destroy MRSA and save a boys foot and leg from amputation (about 15 years ago). I don’t know if any other honey would have but the Manuka definitely did.

The New Zealanders want to call it unique but Manuka is another name for Tea tree which is abundant in southern Australia. And there are plenty of honey producers in Australia.

Well, I can tell you the following: I've never bought Manuka honey, but its texture really reminds me of the unprocessed honey that we make in the region of Foloi in Ilia, Greece, close to ancient Olympia. Although, it is different: it is made from oak and the arbutus unedo, a tree with a fruit similar to strawberries. But when unprocessed, it has a very fluid texture, with its taste being somewhat bitter, and then sweet, but with an extreme note all way through. Which indicates it has a lot of antioxidant properties. I would recommend that.

The Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) is actually also native to Australia. It is part of the Myrtaceae family which is mostly endemic in Australia, with a few species found in New Zealand and South East Asia.

Their honey might be good, but the marketing is definitely better

Why Manuka honey so expensive? "Because it is from New Zealand." Yeah, that's a good reason.

The best honey I’ve ever had was when I was on vacation in Turkey. It was local to the village. The waiter gave us a jar from free. It was heavenly delicious.

I was investigating on line about one of the little trees I had planted a few years back in my HOA garden and it was a Manuka Myrtle with pink flowers. I have decided off my own back to become more interested in growing and using herbs NOT pharma as I have had a horrid time with pills. SOOO....yesterday I was looking into this tree of mine then today when I went shopping I stopped to look for the usual honey I buy to put in tea and hey presto, there was a pot of Manuka Honey staring at me from the shelf. I gulped when I saw the price of over $30 but I knew my health was more important than eating crap! Excuse my 'French' as they say. Anyway it was a sign to me I was on the right path with using my own garden for medicinal purposes. So I enjoyed this little clip, thank you! ;)

The best honey I've had so far in my life was Greek thyme honey. I love it. I also had a decent American raw honey from the New York area. Was so tasty. There are lots of amazing, healthy honeys. I don't buy Manuka because it's too pricey for me, and I like to consume 2-3 tablespoons of honey per day.

I used manuka honey many years and it does help with stomachache and period pain very effective in a short time, which no other honeys can do. My husband however prefer local honey and it helps with his allergies

Remember local honey is the best. It might help your local bee keeper, the environment and pollution levels, but might also give health benefits like reduced allergic reactions against local pollens.

Manuka honey is great for diabetics because of it's health properties and slightly lower sugar levels. Even though honey does spike blood sugar, tests have shown that eating honey as a diabetic helps us deal with disease particularly in the defense of disease. Since we're prone to have serious problems with disease such as picking up respiratory and colds/flus we need all the help we can get and honey is one of the ways that helps us.
