This is a song about a woman who desperately wants to find true love and companionship but who is terrified by the idea of being with a real, flawed person and experiencing the pain that comes along with it. All the other ones are guys who have been with her who she rejected because they turned out to be real, flawed dudes. I think the coin-operated boy in the video is a fantasy but also could be someone she has found who is willing to play the part of the idealized fantasy image she has in her head. This person is willing to exist co-dependently in the relationship while sacrificing their own sense of self and their own human, emotional needs. The sad irony is that, while they are in a relationship together, emotionally, they are both alone and isolated. trapped in a miserable, loveless relationship based on an impossible fantasy.

My mom used to listen to this song all the time as I was growing up and I always found it "annoying". I'm fairly certain that the song is NOT meant to be an objectification of men. The song is about wanting a 'perfect' relationship with the 'perfect' partner. But people aren't perfect and a "coin operated boy" would be, by definition, 'perfect' but he wouldn't be real.

OK, Lets set the record straight I watched an interview with Amanda Palmer she said this is the most mistook song she ever made.
