The rest of the back story is that Simon consoled her after the announcement of the winner. He told her how excellent she was and that he was going to help her. Her back story is that, as a newborn, she didn’t get enough oxygen and had mild brain damage. She did a lot of pub singing Kareoke but she wasn’t taken as seriously as they did others.
Simon set her up for success by creating an environment that supported her, screened her from the madness of the music industry, and stayed by her every step of the way into international stardom and beyond.
She was able to buy a house, but preferred to live in her apartment. She has traveled the world several times over and won many awards both domestically and abroad. Simon, the man we think of as mean, was and is her greatest supporter.
