Lyrics:
Round and round this broken rat race
I’m moving and stopping, I’m window shopping
For love, for fame, for anything that will take me

When I’m done taking up space
I’m coming home late to a dirty place
Half awake, the broom, the rake, take the kid out of me

Just say the word
Just say the word and I’ll give it up
The word and I’ll hang it up

What do I know?
What do I hold
That will not fade away
All things fade away
Where will I be?
The crop and the wheat
Feast and fade away
All things fade away

Putting on a business coat
For the tear in the jeans, the hole in the boat
To make the burden float, to pay in full this time

When you’re living on a dreamer’s salary
A broken harvest, feels like robbery
What do I do this for, if it's just gonna pour out easily?

You’ve seen me there
Climbing the stairs, beggin’ for air
And not coming up
I’m not coming up

What do I know?
What do I own
That will not fade away
All things fade away
Where will I be?
The fruit and the tree
Thirst and fade away
All things fade away

All things fade away

Legit, this song is one of my favourite songs of all time. Madison's voice, the key changes, the chord progressions, the guitar's unique sound, the lyrics, it's all perfect.

I just watched her open for Hozier at Madison Square Garden where she performed this and OH MY GOD. I've never heard anyone sing like that in person. I hope the exposure from his tour gets her the attention she deserves!

This is one of those songs where it is incredibly difficult to stop from returning to and pressing play. The moment that the song begins everything that was weighing heavily on our shoulders temporarily lightens. Beautiful piece. 🌸

Your music is simply transcendent. This comes from a 69 year old ER physician/musician who went to Woodstock (the real one!).

I heard this song this morning on NPR and was amazed by how much Madison sounds like Harriet Wheeler. So glad to see this uploaded.

Masterfully written, executed and produced ... As always.

the lyrics here, on the second verse especially, hit so close to home. They really capture that ambivalent drained hopefulness that exists on the verge of defeat so well.

To: M.C., 🙂 I just heard a snippet of this on NYC Public Radio's New Sounds website this morning. So I found you here. I moved from New York, where I was born and raised, 44 years there. My Mom passed from Covid last year, May. This song is so hauntingly and simplistically beautiful. It puts me straphanging on the subway or happily walking down the street through the hustle and bustle of folks rushing, to thinking of the loves that were "almost", but didn't "make it" (all their faults, lol) or even looking at the ocean while sitting on the bench at Long Beach, Long Island's boardwalk and downtown in my little quiet spot behind the Financial Center starring across the river at New Jersey. I can even see myself at my former high school in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen area, now 30 years ago. This is like a soundtrack to my life. I'm in tears literally listening 🎧 to this as I write. Happy and sad simultaneously, full of immense nostalgia of my past and hope for the future. All things do fade away... Thank you for this song, thank you for this cry. I need to let it out mostly regarding my Mom. This pandemic has had me just "doing", thus avoiding actually sitting with my feelings. Thank you for this much appreciated pause pouring into my ears. 💝 Peace.

Heard this song on NPR morning edition and I just had to hear the whole thing. What an epic and hauntingly beautiful work of art. Congrats on the release of this song.
