Halloween (1978) The Movies Within the Movie - Monster Madness

Every October, it's a tradition to watch the original John Carpenter's Halloween, but what about the horror movies the characters are watching in Halloween? It's a familiar trope, the movie within the movie, something to compliment what's actually happening in the film. It could be a tribute to the movies the director grew up, but could there be more of a reason why these movies are on the TV? Is there a reason why Carpenter chose The Thing (1951), Forbidden Planet, and Night of the Living Dead specifically, or, was it all at random? That's what I'm investigating today!

Even though James is most famous for AVGN, I could listen to him talk about movies all day. He's very eloquent and passionate. You could tell just how much he loves what he does.

This is James at his best. Completely relaxed, clearly very enthused about the subject matter and offering insight that very few others would be able to provide. The parallels with the ID Monster and Loomis and Michael I don't think I've heard before. Overall really enjoyable and insightful.

Monster Madness has been going on so long that the opening itself is nostalgic.

Itโ€™s worth noting that the zombie girl was stabbing into a pillow when filming that scene. So Michael discovering he was just stabbing pillows with the surgical tool was an even bigger parallel.

Jamed saying 'It's cinemassacres monster madness' is strangely comforting after all these years...

Just had to say that this is what Monster Madness is about. It's a cozy dive into a warm pool of horror history and nostalgia from someone who dearly loves it. This is everything I enjoy about the season.

The scene where Tommy looks out the window and sees Michael carrying Annie into the house is my favorite scene. I agree that the sound effects of the ship landing in Forbidden Planet perfectly fit the scene. That's such a clever way to use sound effects from another movie in your own film. Excellent comparison and connections between Halloween and these three films!

When I was younger I was always confused as to how The Thing could be in Halloween when it came out years after. Didn't know it was a cover of an old movie until three years ago.

Fun fact: John Carpenter's favorite movie director is Howard Hawks who directed The Thing From Another World. His five favorite movies: Only Angels Have Wings (Howard Hawks, 1939) Rio Bravo (Howard Hawks, 1959) Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958) Blow-Up (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966)

This is James at his best. Investigating niches in classic horror movies. Exactly what I'm looking for this October <3
