The difference between the golden rule and Kantâs categorical imperative is that itâs not just about how you treat others. Many people take the golden rule to mean âif I harm no one, I can do as I pleaseâ while ignoring all the other biblical rules for life. Kantâs imperative makes a key distinction to avoid this, suggesting that you cannot harm yourself either. E.g. you taking drugs or drinking heavily might not harm other people but if the whole world did this, there would be more mental illness, more violence etc. Similarly, simple laziness would in Kantâs view be unethical. Therefore, if we were to to reform the golden rule in view of Kant we might say âtreat others as you you wish to be treated and treat yourself as you wish others to treat themselvesâ
At least thatâs my understanding
