This is a guide on exactly how to install Mantella and Open AI Chat GPT to talk to any NPC In Skyrim and have full sentient conversations! I showcased this earlier in the week and I have since had a lot of requests to finish this guide.

ATTENTION This is a very lengthy guide with a lot of steps but I have done my very best to make it as simple as possible. All steps have a chapter to them so you can go back and rewatch any step with ease.

This mod will work with VR and Non-VR versions of the games, just adjust the file downloads on each download page to match your version of Skyrim. I have included ALL the links to ALL the downloads you will need in order of how I have installed them in the tutorial, please do be aware that as Mantella evolves the files may too!

Thank you so much for this. I spent Sunday installing and setting up etc and it's working great. I could never have done this without your step by step guide!! I've not played Skyrim since launch many years ago, but this pulled me back and is great in a Pimax Crystal. Just need to find a way to get this running with 'Mad God's Overhaul' if that's even possible, and I'm set for the year 😃. Thanks again, really appreciate it! Subbed!

Just a quick FYI for folks - one thing that wasn't covered in this tutorial - as one of the last steps, before running Mantella - you need to crack open that directory that contains the Mantella executable and open Mantella's config.ini: in that file, make sure the directories to your Skyrim Game folder, xVA synth location, etc. are properly set to the right directories. The default settings are placeholders that are not correct, but they have comments above the setting that will tell you what to do. Additionally, this mod might not work properly if you installed SkyrimSE/VR on your primary OS (C:\) drive via Steam - you want to install Skyrim Special Edition or Skyrim VR on an alternate drive, in a dedicated steam library folder. This config.ini file is also where you can set LLM token limits (for better NPC memory), LLM choice (GPT-4, GPT-3.5, local LLM models), LLM prompts for different NPC interactions, and so on. It's all pretty well documented in the file, so it's worth looking through the whole thing so you can tweak it to your liking.

Just an FYI, the default voice model - Toppy - is free on open AI. It's mentioned in the description. :)

I think my last comment bugged out or something, good video, thanks for the help, I ended up joining their discord and have been asking (interrogating) one of the devs and it seems like they are in the process of swapping the communication language (nerd stuff) removing the need to move the game out of the (x86) folder, once they do that I will be making a few videos on this mod on my channel, in the future, so thanks again and here's to the future of AI in video games 👍

Is it normal for the npc's to take a long time to listen or sometimes not even listen at all? I got it all working but the interactions feel so wonky and slow. Are you experiencing this too and is it just the way it is at this point in time?

Did the mod authors write scripts for the AI to understand the lore or is chatgpt is really that advanced

9:30 - Just an FYI, you don't need to download the voice models one by one from Nexus Mods. If you have Nexus Premium, you can download one or all of them through xVASynth app. This and other methods are described in the official Mantella guide.
