I liked Gale because he was a realistic character. He is loyal to his values and overall a decent person, but is brutal to those that he perceives as threats. I think he was shafted for doing exactly what was necessary to win the war. Peeta answered injustice with compassion, whereas Gale answered it with justice.

I don't think Gale was indifferent toward Prim's death. I think he just realized that he could never salvage his and Katniss's relationship after accidentally killing her sister. He knew that he had crossed the line and decided to cut it off as decisively and calmly as he could. I'm sure that, if the books were from his perspective, we would have seen him deeply distressed on the inside in that moment.

Katniss ended up with Peeta because she realized sheâd been wrong about gale. When she met him he was kind, and caring, But over time it she realized it was only to her and his family. He was cold to other people and would kill anyone to survive- which was the exact thing katniss couldnât bear anymore. Katniss is reckless, just like gale. They were the exact replica of the term âYou canât fight fire with fire.â
Gale was always trying to make Katniss lose her rebellious side.
While peeta was a dandelion in the beginning of spring. He maintained her fiery-soul and keeps it under control. Gale never realized how many peopleâs deaths she had on her consciousness. When gale talked about an uprising she knew he would kill to get what he wanted, and she was afraid to tell him that for every death you caused, it left a mark on your soul. She knew that when he made a bomb that would explode twice, killing medics and people who tried to save lives.
In the end he couldnât handle her insanity, he just brought more harm to her than help. He didnât know how to help her deal with the trauma she had been through. Peeta did, he understood how it felt to lose family, he knew what she had done. He watched first hand as she killed others and watched her friends die one after another. He knew she had lost almost all the only people who understood what she had been through (Rue, finnick, wiress, etc. and almost Peeta and Johanna)
He could tell her he knew, when gale couldnât. He could comfort her, when gale couldnât or didnât know how to. He followed and watched over her, when gale didnât. He never gave up on her, Gale did. I think Collins ended this series beautifully. I wouldnât have wanted it any other way.
Not to mention gale became a big jerk in catching fire and mockingjay.

Gale was a fine character, but honestly, in Catching Fire he turned into a crybaby. Katniss was going through a lot with Peeta and being a victor, and Gale kept making her life more difficult instead of better, so I actually lost a lot of respect for Gale (I read the books, but thatâs my opinion on Gale.)

I just love how Katniss here is trying her best to survive the hunger games and be the face of a rebellion and Gale and Peeta here are just like "yeah but...who do you like more?"
