Good topic. I think it should be emphasized that Saruman 'fell' before he even used the Orthanc Stone. It was his study of--and desire for--the Rings of Power that caused him to fall. With this in mind, one can see how he was more vulnerable to Sauron's influence when he did use the Stone. Moreover, unlike Denethor, he he had no right to use the Stone. Denethor, as an authorized deputy and steward of the King, could lawfully use the Stone in Minus Tirith. This made a difference as the Stones where given to Elendil and his heirs in perpetuity, and unlawful use required greater will and strain. Also, Denethor, though prideful, was not fallen as Saruman was, and still kept to his general overall purpose of preserving Gondor from the Shadow. This too aided him in his use of the Stone in comparison to Saruman.
