Introducing Mae Stephens: watch her DSCVR Artists to Watch 2024 performances here:    • Mae Stephens - If We Ever Broke Up (L...

All you need is one song that connects. And certainly Mae Stephens’ “If We Ever Broke Up” has connected - the UK 20-year-old’s TikTok hit has blasted her from a striver to a winner in just a few short months. But here’s the thing you’ve got to remember about having that one song - it probably took talent, time and diligence to bring it to fruition. The reason Stephens began writing tunes at the age of 12 was because she was mature enough to think that a panorama of a kid’s feelings could be considered valuable. She told TIME magazine her very first ditties were shared “to push that emotional awareness.” A Sigrid zealot who once enjoyed ballads over bangers, Mae has a sensitive side for sure. But in cahoots with her manager-father, she has a canny side as well. The pair have studied the TikTok algorithm for a few years now. When they shared a 15-second clip of “Broke Up” to the platform at the end of last year, it exploded. Oddly, the song wasn’t her typical fare - there weren’t a lot of bops in her bag previously. But she’s got that vocabulary down now, and she’s definitely becoming articulate with it. The upbeat vibe, the wry lyrics - stretching her skill set to prioritize catchiness has broadened her perspective. Now signed to EMI, she’s flexing pop muscles galore. And she’s making pals. “Broke Up” follow-up “Mr. Right” features the nuanced glee of Meghan Trainor, and moves the pop needle further forward. Looks like she had a LOT of fun when she bounced through both tunes in the glow of our Artists To Watch stage.
