Counterpoint to the only big and mainstream get pushed by the algo. Recently, a bit over a year now, YouTube will push to me stuff from truly small creators. We're talking less than 10k subs and views usually, a lot of the times less than 1k still. This includes music, it's actually really cool.

One of the most clear observations I can make to validate what Fantano has said about the change in the youtube algorithms, and how aggresively biased and "Top 40" focused it has gotten, is his most recent ye video.
Man didn't even want to review the album, yet that video got more views than any of his this year. But people still ain't fucking with Ligua Ignota and their side projects or tons of other left field stuff that I'd personally want to see Fantano review more of.
But it's like we're back in the 90s where corporate control keeps out what's real. The only way to get your music noticed is if you are one of the richest and most attractively perceived images going (Like Drake or Taylor) OR be a wealthy social pariah and just say/post/do stupid shit to make people talk about it. It's gross.

Streaming platforms (looking at you Spotify!) just need to distribute each user's subscription payments between the artists they listen to, i.e. NOT throw all the money into the same bucket and then distributing it between all artists on the platform based on streams.
If I pay 10$ and only listen to a single song during the whole month, I want whole 10$ (minus the platform fee which should be small) to go to that artist.

Unions would offer significant benefits to musicians, yet the accessibility and ease of making and producing music compared to film or television create significant barriers to unionization. The reality is that musicians tend to be less organized and more individually focused compared to other sectors of the arts and entertainment industry. The absence of a unified union encompassing writers, producers, and performers has led to exploitative practices within the music industry.
In examining the nature of creative production, there are both component and collective mediums. Creating a record exemplifies a collective medium, as it integrates various forms of expression such as songwriting, music production, audio engineering, and performance. However, the process typically involves less organizational structure compared to the production of a typical film, video games or television show.
Its obviously possible to create bigger unions, but it seems much further off and more difficult than other trades, because of the nature of this particular medium.

ignoring the most massive acts, musicians love sharing their music too much to withhold it, and don't care about money enough to fight for it. The people that pour their heart and soul into creativity are really unlikely to adjust in pursuit of profit. I don't think this gets better until we do something other than capitalism.

Unionization in music could actually be so huge and could literally kickstart an indie renaissance
