There's two ways to interpret the song's title: 1. Someone is killing butterflies. 2. There are butterflies that are killing.

For those who don’t know, this song is about self harm, suicide, and the butterfly project. The song is very coded to explain how one feels in, or leading up to the act of self harming. The term “killing butterflies” is used when those going through the project, draw butterflies on themselves and whenever they self harm, they say “i killed the butterfly” instead of flat out saying “I hurt myself”. This is to safely convey messages to those close the them who can help without being given looks, unwanted opinions, etc. by other people. It’s actually very sad but the pace of the song resembles the frantic array of emotions that go through your head and that the only thing on your mind, the only solution you feel you have is to harm yourself. Definitely not a happy song but very beautiful and wonderfully expressive, giving a voice to those of us still stuck in a very dark place. - commenter on a different vid

Ok so the way I interpret this song is that it’s about suicide and self harm. So people will draw a butterfly on there wrist and if they don’t self harm then the butterfly was set free but if the cut then they killed the butterfly. So when he says killing Butterflies it could means that he’s self harming a lot. But this song could also mean that your killing the butterflies you get in your stomach when you like someone, meaning they are done with love and gonna kill it.

I have a theory that this song is about a love that failed, mostly butterflies are like illusions, and the boy wanted to erase all that from his memory. In the part 'We spend all night killing butterflies' he says it in the sense as if he had had an affair with another person to kill those illusions even more, and the 'all we have is our appetite' which can be similar to the phrase 'I feel butterflies in my stomach' which also represents that memories and illusions are the only thing left for both of them. I don't know, I just wanted to say this since I've been thinking about it for a while since I read the translation xD (Che, thanks for the likes qwq, you should never say what I thought of the history of a song and I thought it was going to be ignored xdxd)
