For those who donât know, this song is about self harm, suicide, and the butterfly project. The song is very coded to explain how one feels in, or leading up to the act of self harming. The term âkilling butterfliesâ is used when those going through the project, draw butterflies on themselves and whenever they self harm, they say âi killed the butterflyâ instead of flat out saying âI hurt myselfâ. This is to safely convey messages to those close the them who can help without being given looks, unwanted opinions, etc. by other people. Itâs actually very sad but the pace of the song resembles the frantic array of emotions that go through your head and that the only thing on your mind, the only solution you feel you have is to harm yourself. Definitely not a happy song but very beautiful and wonderfully expressive, giving a voice to those of us still stuck in a very dark place.

Ok so the way I interpret this song is that itâs about suicide and self harm. So people will draw a butterfly on there wrist and if they donât self harm then the butterfly was set free but if the cut then they killed the butterfly. So when he says killing Butterflies it could means that heâs self harming a lot.
But this song could also mean that your killing the butterflies you get in your stomach when you like someone, meaning they are done with love and gonna kill it.

I have a theory that this song is about a love that failed, mostly butterflies are like illusions, and the boy wanted to erase all that from his memory. In the part 'We spend all night killing butterflies' he says it in the sense as if he had had an affair with another person to kill those illusions even more, and the 'all we have is our appetite' which can be similar to the phrase 'I feel butterflies in my stomach' which also represents that memories and illusions are the only thing left for both of them.
