This adaptation changed my view on the book, I didn't like it as kid. And a lot of the themes went over my head but watching this made me realize Stanley was mentally disabled and then the whole point of the story clicked for me.
The grandparents never listened to Stanley ever they weren't bad people but they were implied to have been dismissive of his feelings. Stanley was frustrated as a disabled man from the 80's- early 90's would be about being ignored.
So in an attempt to have others listen to him he became " The boss"
Stanley is flawed due to him using fear to get his way but his frustration is understandable and its great he's not the final villain and has a kid who sticks up for him. I saw it as a critique of benevolent ableists. nd the scarecrows were just window dressing for the real conflict of feeling powerless and scared due to others dismissing your feelings.

12:14 This whole sequence used to scare me so much when I was little. I was afraid of waking up and seeing scarecrows in my bedroom. Watching it now, I just find it funny.
