Eric Hutchinson (singer/songwriter), one of Mayim’s favorite musicians, stops by for an impromptu jam session with Mayim! He discusses harnessing depression to influence his musical creativity, the effects of his father’s muscular dystrophy on his family, and what he admires about the younger generations’ attitude toward mental health. Mayim opens up about what Eric’s music has meant to her and they reflect on their struggles in high school. They also consider how the eldest sibling can set the tone of the household, how much of our difficult emotions we should share with our children, and Mayim’s process of "boring herself to sleep." Eric talks about his musical influences, the origins of his own musicality, the rollercoaster turn of events after being signed to Madonna’s record label, and who his songs are actually about. He explains why he chooses to lean into his depression in order to connect with his fans, his focus on staying present, and his emotional outlets apart from music. Mayim and Eric wrap the episode with a spontaneous jam session where they perform one of Eric’s songs together!

Watching Mayim fangirling about Eric exactly as people does about her is so damned funny! Those are my fav and truly rewarding episodes! It’s such a privilege to watch live that your joys & struggles are the same ones we common people have, Mayim! That makes you an even more fabulous and down-to-earth person in our eyes. And it makes us feel a little less quirky & lonely.. Thank you both for being so open, vulnerable & generous ones! 💜

Eric’s words “When do you know you made it?” THE QUESTION for any creator. I’d answer with a humbly “never”. The architect in me feels s/thing close to it when I see “my” building well lived and used. Appropriated by the ones it was destined for. But not even then. No project is ever finished. Nor song’s lyrics are forever nor mean eternally what was written for. As our life, that is always an unfinished project. Revisited . In loop. Till our last breath. How I loved this episode!

The pure JOY in this episode was palpable, especially at the very end. There’s something about Mayim when she lets the joy and light leak out, wowzers does it resonate for this GenXer. Thank you, both for what might be my favorite episode of Breakdown, ever!

I love all the episodes but the ones where you are a true fan of your guest are by far my favorites. Your voice is a different octave and I love watching you thoroughly enjoy every second of the interview. It’s a little glimpse into how I’d be if I ever got to speak with you. It’s genuine and that’s what I love about it.

Mayim, I discovered your podcast after watching your interview with Hayley Williams and now I’m watching all your other episodes. This interview with Eric really touched me, especially when he talked about his father. My older brother also recently got diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy. It’s something I still find hard to talk about because I haven’t processed it. But it felt reassuring to hear Eric’s story and having my feelings expressed in a way I was not able to do myself. It has really encouraged me to start seeking support for me and my family about this. Thank you. 💛

i love people who love the beatles....a love like this never dies children, i have been listening since 1962. there is never a happening in a day or a season in a life that does not have an appropriate correlating beatles lyric. i really respect and appreciate you mayim and jonathan and i enjoyed what eric had to say as well as how he said it....therefore, i will listen to his album, in order. P.S. i listened to Sounds Like This and loved it....eric reminded me of Paolo Nutini if he had taken a big hit of Billy Preston. excellent vibe!

That heart rate during sleep is also something I just noticed since getting an Oura ring. It’s explained why I’m so tired. I’ve learned a lot about making my sleep a priority. This jam session - could tell how much fun you were having. That had to be a dream come true for you - thanks for sharing it with us

A great way to start the day! As one of your older fans (67 y.o.), I loved seeing this performer I knew absolutely nothing about, and learned a lot from the video. I'm so gratified to hear that the Beatles' legacy is being passed down through the generations. I was 8 y.o. when their music hit the US in late '63, and when they arrived in NYC for the first time, early in '64. So I grew up with them and all the other great music (and some awful music, too) of those times. Listening to Eric list his roots in that era did my heart good, as did watching you enjoy jamming with him. Thank you!
