Alfred Blalock (1899-1964), a cardiologist (therefore, self-confident to the point of arrogance), leaves Vanderbilt for Johns Hopkins taking with him his lab technician, Vivien Thomas (1910-1985). Thomas, an African-American without a college degree, is a gifted mechanic and tool-maker with hands splendidly adept at surgery. In 1941, Blalock and Thomas take on the challenge of blue babies and invent bypass surgery. After trials on dogs, their first patient is baby Eileen, sure to die without the surgery. In defiance of custom and Jim Crow, Blalock brings Thomas into the surgery to advise him, but when Life Magazine and kudos come, Thomas is excluded. Will he receive his due?

Gosh I almost broke to pieces when he was looking around the room at all the portraits including his, and all the young black doctors walking by because he opened that door. Thank you Dr. Thomas and Dr. Blalock.

Thank you Dr Thomas! I am alive because of you! Quadruple bypass was a success 8 years ago, and I am still going strong! ❀

We need more autobiographical movies made like this!! This movie took me on a historically emotional ride and was beautifully written! I am thankful for Tiktok suggesting this movie. I never heard of Dr. Vivian Thomas until today but I am certainly thankful for his monumental contributions to the medical community!

I am 67 yrs. old now & I was born w/TOF. I saw this movie a few years ago & really enjoyed it. Because of Dr. Thomas AND God, I was given a chance in life. I was 11 when I had TOF surgery in NYC, and now I have 3 kids and 13 grandkids. Thank you, Dr. Thomas!

I owe these two men my existence. My father would have died as a blue baby in the summer of 1964 without them. I would never have been born. I know they can't read this, but I thank them. An important film. More should watch it.

It took both Blalock and Thomas to succeed in this ground breaking surgery that saved the lives of many babies who would otherwise have no chance of survival. Yet, Blalock took all the credits. He could have helped Thomas in so many ways so he could achieve his full potential and have a better life. Yet all he did was helping himself and used Thomas as a cheap labour. I'm so pleased that there were so many eye witnesses and Thomas eventually got his recognition from the University, ironically not from the man whom he helped so much. Justice has been served! Though a bit too late.

My mother wouldn't have grown up without the work this man did for the world. She had open heart surgery as an infant. Thank you, Doctor, for making a difference. I wouldn't be here without you.

This is the second time I've watched this. I had feelings of anger at the terrible way black people were treated, feelings of sadness, feelings of gratitude to that wonderful man. It also makes me very grateful to the surgeons who saved my son's life, he was born with tetralogy of fallot and is a fine and healthy 15 year old now. Thank you Vivian and Alfred.

The kind of movie that should be part of a highschools. Just amazing Thanks to all who helped bring this story too Life. What a man and what a story of how he became a leader and how the world change from his first day he walked in to having his likeness hung along with all the others. So amazing

I'm sure, that because of, Vivien Thomas........ Dr. Vivien Thomas, I am one of those recipients, who at the age of 10 years old, was one of the first patients to have open heart surgery, at Westchester county medical center in Valhalla New York, in 1969. Because of his skills along with others, I am still. Thank you, to him and others of color who truly made history. Those who didn't get the proper respect and acknowledgement., in the world of medicine and medical sciences. πŸ˜·πŸ¨πŸŒ‘οΈπŸ’‰πŸ’ŠπŸ©ΉπŸ©ΊπŸ§¬ Then and now ‼️ πŸ™πŸ½πŸ˜‡πŸ™πŸ½
