I've worked as an asylum support activist. It's absolutely maddening to see people STILL not understand what 'illegal' entry to the UK is - even TLDR News do it at 10:55! And again at 14:51. Arriving by boat is NOT ILLEGAL. It never has been, and it isn't now. It's literally how you claim asylum - you have to be IN the country before you can present yourself at the border to claim asylum status - that's how it works. People in the Govt must know this, but other people are just saying it because it suits their vile political agenda, or they're too lazy to care. It boils my piss.

11:56 and also keep in mind what Australia did, did not lower numbers at all, it cost billions ruined thousands of peoples lives and the numbers only went down when the conflicts the people were escaping from ended, almost like that's why asylum seekers exist.

10:49 this is the most annoying thing it's not illegal migration, this is a legitimate and legal way to seek asylum and is used when you have no safe routes.

I was considering moving to britain since my partner moved there, but then I realised it would be preferable to move to a country that isn't surrounded by water, doesn't require me to get a visa, has better working and living conditions, and is more welcoming. Which is basically any country in the EU to the left of mine. So me and my UK based partner, who's a nurse btw, are going with this plan instead.

The reason why we know that people coming in boats are almost all genuine is because it is a lot more expensive to pay the gangs to get in the small boats than it is to get a holiday visa pay for a plane ticket and just overstay the visa. Which overstaying visa is how most illegal migration occurs.

As you might be aware, Tony Abbott, former Australian PM, is probably behind the messaging on this. His election campaign ran on the slogans, 'axe the tax' (referring to the carbon 'tax' we had) and 'stop the boats'. Man loves his three-word slogans. I smell his eye-watering stench all over this.

From a German perspective, this looks like madness. We have our fair share of Germans who hate brown people, non-Christian people, poor people, ... . I was shocked when the AfD got voted into parliament. I was shocked even more that the party managed to stay in parliament ever since. Their hatred sounds exactly like the shit we hear from the Tories. The difference being that the AfD is a small party, while the Tories are the second largest party. It frightens me how far Right the whole world has become during the last few years. And I fear that this is just the beginning...
(In case anyone is wondering: Yes, I took Brexit personally. Brexit felt like a big "F you!" to Europe. Brexit screamed "We are cutting off our arms and legs ... only to spite you!". And, worse, I think Brexit was a signal for the far Right everywhere "Look, the European Union is weak. Look, it is ok to openly hate other people. We have a new friend with that island.")

As an Australian, I offer my condolences. What our country has done to asylum seekers for years now is truly disgusting. The most recent 'Liberal' (conservative) Prime Minister down here even had some random idiot constituent make him a novelty trophy which literally consisted of a metal cutout of a small fishing boat with the words 'I stopped these' etched on the base. He proudly displayed this idiotic 'trophy' in his office. Absolutely pathetic...
