Even if you don’t know Jimmy Jam (alongside his longtime collaborator, Terry Lewis) by name, you’ve almost certainly heard his work. For more than 30 years, Jimmy Jam has been at the helm of some of the greatest, most influential pop, funk, and R&B records, bringing his indelible sonic signature to the works of the S.O.S. Band, Lionel Richie, Aretha Franklin, Boyz II Men, Usher, Chaka Khan, and, most notably, Janet Jackson, as well as countless others. After a lifetime of numerous Billboard number-one hits, alongside a slew of Grammy Awards wins and nominations, Jimmy Jam has more than earned his tenure as the chairman emeritus of the board of the Recording Academy. Among the many, many instruments that led to so many timeless tracks, Moog’s Minimoog Model D beats right at the heart, and Jimmy Jam stopped by Sweetwater to check out our exclusive mahogany version of this lauded analog synth, bringing the funk with a few tales along the way. Check it out!

Jimmy Jam is underrated on the synth bass lines he has created over his illustrious career. Not to mention his melodic lines and lush chords. The combination of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was just musically lethal.

This man, along with Terry Lewis are musical treasures. The catalog of hits is amazing. The sounds are iconic. There is no way to identify a favorite record by Jam and Lewis. There were too many and many were brilliant. My question to Sweetwater is did you let him take the Moog home?

They have so many INCREDIBLE hits its so hard to pick just one, but what comes to mind is " JUST BE GOOD TO ME" - ( S.O.S Band), " I DIDN"T MEAN TO TURN U ON" - (Cherelle), "SATURDAY LOVE" - (Cherelle), So many JANET JACKSON songs, C'mon I can go on and on and on. IF you have not heard these song do yourself a big MUSICAL favor and go back and listen, the production and playing on those songs are just Timeless and Incredible.

“If You were here tonight” by Alexander O’Neal is one of the most beautiful ballads & Janet’s thumping beat of “The Knowledge” although could be Terry’s also. I also loved attending the live studio session of The Jimmy Jam Jan Jan Jam session of Control. It was a experience I’ll NEVER forget. He’s at one of the top of my list of keyboardist & studio wizards.

Jimmy. You and Terry need to be doing more of these funky rifts in your music! Just like back in the day. It would reinvigorate music!

The first time I ever heard of Jimmy Jam was in the 80s when Janet Jackson started getting hit after hit, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were behind most of those hits. By the time Escapade came out, which I love a lot, I wasn't surprised that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were behind that song too.

It was Prince and I don’t think it was a minimoog, but the song by his band, Get IT UP, has one of the best synth sounds ever.
