How dangerous is Mississippi? Please bear with us, we can’t tell you all that is there to say about this state. The interest we have in this state is as long and twisted as its name. The state has been consistently ranked high among the most dangerous states in the U.S. But opinion differs. Some rank it as one of the safest states in America. So, in reality, how dangerous is Mississippi? That is the question we want to concern ourselves with in this video. We will look at a number of factors that contribute to this negative ranking, including rates of violent crime, gun deaths, poverty, and access to healthcare and education. Please enjoy this video.
About Mississippi
Let’s first remind you a few things about Mississippi. That’ll help shed light on whatever will be discussed about the state here. It’s located in the Southeastern region of the U.S. Its immediate neighbors are Tennessee to the north, Alabama to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, Louisiana to the southwest, and Arkansas to the northwest. The Mississippi River, after which the state was named, largely defines its western boundary. And the river plays a significant role in the economy, history, and safety of the state of Mississippi nicknamed the Magnolia State in recognition of the state’s connection with the Magnolia flowers and tree.
By area, the state is the 32nd-largest of the 50 states in the U.S. while it’s the 35th-most populous. Please take note of this next point if you believe poverty has any bearing on the rate of crime in a location. Mississippi’s per-capita income is the lowest in the U.S. Jackson, the state's capital and largest city, is not among the most prosperous in the country. Is it possible that one or more of its location, population, neighbors, and economy has anything to do with safety in the state?
Is It Really Dangerous?
We want to leave the answer to this question to you. Please let’s dignify you with that! We will look at figures from reliable sources and comment on them. Kindly note that some of those figures are not universally agreed upon. However, we’re sure any figures from the FBI should be reliable enough to be considered before forming an opinion about safety. An analysis of the 2020 crime data from the FBI shows that the Magnolia State is the 17th safest state in the country. We’re not the ones that did the analysis. Please keep that in mind when you want to comment on that.
Based on the figures from the FBI, the violent crime rate with 8,638 incidents in the state ranks 37th highest in the U.S. Out of every 100,000 residents of the Hospitality State, only 291.2 are likely to be a victim of violent crimes, perhaps proof that the state is indeed hospitable. For this, Mississippi is 24.92 better than the U.S. with an average violent crime rate of 387.8 per 100,000. However, that cannot be said of property crimes in the state. With a total of 62,351 throughout the year in Mississippi, the state ranks 23rd highest in the country. At a rate of 2,101.6, it is 7.32 percent worse than the U.S. average property crime rate of 1,958.2 per 100,000.
