The reason the security is inadequate is because companies are getting cheap. Its why the events have gotten worse, the ticket sales have gone up in price and number, and why the giveaways and prizes are crappier. Less resources and less planning put into the event means more profits for the company running the events. Its all fun and games until a celebrity gets attacked or someone is crushed during a stampede

as a golf fan and an f1 fan, i hated the netflix cup. the focus was way too much on the celebrities. i wanted to see f1 drivers play golf, not random celebrities telling us why they care about the vegas gp. also the gimmick holes were just weird and the actual livestream was garbage. overlapping audio, echo, mics not picking up what people are saying and the obnoxious commentators were supposed to be able to talk to the teams the whole time but it wasn't working. 😅

I work as a freelancer in TV and film production in Vegas. I was offered a well below the standard day rate to work on this (Netflix Cup) gig the same week as all the F1 construction nightmare was culminating! Just on top of it being something that I (and all other locals) already been dealing with for a full year at this point Thankfully, I had another gig offered to me for last weekend and earlier this week, with a normal day rate, and far from the Strip!!!

It was so nice meeting you on the course and chatting for a bit! My friend and I were part of the "show up at 11" crowd, and we're SO glad we did, given how crowded we saw the line got. In retrospect, it was shocking the lack of security there was. We also overheard a ton of 1iota staff echo the "idk" sentiment when people were asking questions.
From our understanding, we were separated by the hole "viewing areas" we were supposed to be stationed at the whole time, but we just ended up wandering. Some of the staff also encouraged us on where to travel and stand for better views. We somehow ended up tailing behind Lily for a good chunk of the event, and the whole time we were like "are we supposed to be here??" (We felt SO bad for Lily with the amount of weirdo dudes that kept interrupting to talk to her and ask for photos.)
I think "chaos" is the perfect word to sum up this entire event. 💀 We had a good time, though! I got lots of great photo and video footage of the drivers LOL

The rich housewife presumably in a loveless marriage cosplay looks on point! 😁
I don't know how security has become lax. I went to Monster Mania in Oaks, PA last weekend and they weren't checking bags or anything. You should go to that next year, I'd love to see what you think... I think they only security issue was that someone was having an alcohol issue and one girl passed out in the Matthew Lillard line after about 3 hours in line.
We waited 5.5 hours to meet him, but they capped his line on Saturday and Sunday after about an hour and a half of being open.

Speaking of security at events, we had a gaming convention here in the UK last month, EGX. Security was abysmal, so bad that we had an oil protest group bring in water guns filled with paint and paint buckets and managed to get up onto the esports stage and cover the PCs - and crowd - in paint well before even a single member of security appeared. That happened the day after I went there but I know from my experience there was 0 bag checks, wristbands where barely being checked and in general it was a nightmare... it's getting worse everywhere not just in america...

The livestream was cringy af. They marketed it as a (less serious) sports broadcast, but it was a big marketing event for dts and that golf show. I follow a massive amount of sports of different kinds (f1, figure skating, american football, handball, biathlon, rugby, all types of gymnastics, athletics, swimming to name just a few) and the vibe was so off. They should have either made it a 'fun' type of event and really lean into that or make it an actual sports broadcast, but then you can't have Bert Kreischer and Marshawn Lynch be host/commentators. My favorite moments were when the smiley came out and on the broadcast it looked like it was judging them hard. Occasionally it felt like I was watching a private golf lesson of an f1 driver (specifically with pierre for some reason).
I'd like to get a refund for the 2 hours of sleep I passed of for this.

If you’ve ever worked security for an event you know you’re basically there to deter ppl from doing anything because you’ll see it and report it. And with events like this(something that only happens once at an improvised venue) the events companies really do just grab whoever randomly needs a job, that’s how security broke down at astroworld.

as someone who is studying event management, you spoke about how unorganised this event & just generally messy was, is sorta surprising cause you would think a business like Netflix would be able to put something on and make clear communication channels letting the staff there know whats going on, like that's one of the biggest thing is just making sure everyone is on the same page. Netflix or whoever else was planning this event and was unable to do this (and the numerous security measures they were missing) like its just poor effort in planning this event

The fact that Netflix held a golf tourney, a sport that has been decreasing rapidly and them deciding to Livestream it and promoting it to teenagers, who dont gaf about golf is beyond me
