When we press play on YouTube, we feed an algorithm that uses all available data to keep us glued to the screen.

This episodeā€™s guest, AI expert Guillaume Chaslot, helped create that recommendation engine and explains how it promotes outrage, conspiracy theories and extremism.

Because of YouTubeā€™s advertising-based business model, it benefits from whatever keeps us staring at the screen, regardless of the type of content. After leaving YouTube, Guillaumeā€™s mission became shedding light on those hidden patterns through his website AlgoTransparency.org, which tracks and publicizes YouTube recommendations for controversial content channels. Through this work, he advocates for YouTube to take responsibility for the videos it promotes and aims to give viewers more control.

The point is made that your brain is up against a supercomputer, but I have found that only a small amount of mindfulness and reflection and subsequently selecting "not interested" or "don't recommend" (both on YouTube and Instagram) has really helped keep my feeds well balanced, interesting, but basically underwhelming enough to avoid being sucked into a rabbit hole of auto-play or endless scrolling. The tools are there, and they are reasonably effective. People just need to learn to and decide to use them.

The only content that makes sense is the music of the 80s or any type of music, itĀ“s joyful and rhythmic, and no matter how long you listen, it doesn't make you bored or depressed but inspires you. It's not polarised content. Music also helps people with brain injury or memory loss, to get back on track.
