Heat the plastic part of the temple arm , if you are going to adjust that part of the temple (or arm). Very hot water will do, opticians will use hot glass beads instead of water.
Pushing (pulling) nose pads will only deform the pads momentarily. This takes firm pressure on the pads metal extention (on quality eyewear). However, given the pain these pads can cause, it is usually best to have an optician do the adjustment as a wearer in pain may be overly aggressive.
