How To... Reinvent a Beloved Series with SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF's Co-Creators

SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF's co-creators Bryan Lee O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski stop by TIFF's Studio 9 to discuss how they went about re-inventing Scott Pilgrim into an anime for a modern audience.

They discuss the origins of the project; their love for the anime studio Science Saru; the pressure returning to Scott Pilgrim after nearly 20 years; the logistics it took to re-unite the cast of SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD despite their busy schedules; the insane hidden easter-eggs and references you may (or may not) have noticed, including the craziest mashup of STREETS OF FIRE and BUBBLEGUM CRISIS ever; and the importance of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack.

Excellent job from the entire team. From the creators to the animators to the voice actors to the musicians, you guys killed it!

Two things: 1) my brain translated this whole show to myself as "oh, so it's Rebuild of Evangelion" as in the creator of the original adapting it to a new format but instead of just adapting it, the new version kind of has a conversation with the old version as it is from the perspective of the same creator but with several more years of experience... and 2) The Old Scott song at first confused me as a "wait what is this... this is somehow familiar" but then the chorus hit and I immediately went "WAIT WAIT WAIT BUBBLEGUM CRISIS???" :D And a bonus thing... if a straight full adaptation of Scott Pilgrim the comic into Scott Pilgrim the second anime were to happen... I'd be down for it. But I guess this too is nice and worst case I can always go reread the comic.

Loooove all the references!! From visuals, to music, to dialogue... I'm gonna be rewatching a zillion times and catching something new everytime. And the fresh take really breathes new life into the canon. I even ended up rereading the comics and it hits kinda different in a good way.

So perfect!! I'm going to have to rewatch the Lucas Lee episode because the only THPS reference I got was Police Truck, which was again, perfect.

If he wanted to make something different than the source material I get it. But the "reinvention for a modern audience" really seems like a cheap excuse that Disney makes for all their remakes changin the classic story and never living up to it because they "modernize it". Audiences TODAY read Scott Pílgrim and find joy in it despite being a "modern audience".

Reinvent? I think you misspelled the word “Ruin”.
