Avatar 2 is coming out this year so I decided to rewatch the first one and see how it holds up. I remember really loving it in the theaters, but I felt very outnumbered by the lackluster response. It seemed to me, from what I heard from friends and the internet in general, is that most people didnโ€™t like it very much. Why have I heard nothing but negative stuff about this film? If its so bad, why is it getting a sequel? People say it's "overrated", so let's investigate.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar (2009) stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri a Na'vi Warrior. Also starring Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi.

When Avatar came out the hype was incredible, and it seemed like everyone was blown away by it and they were endlessly gushing about the movie. I think this is what a lot of people mean when they call it overrated.

I seem to remember Avatar was 3D too and that was a big part of the hype. It was "visually stunning."

It wasn't marketed as "Avatar" but rather "James Cameron's Avatar". James Cameron putting his name on the marketing really helped a lot and got everyone talking.

I was blown away by the 3D effects and the visuals when I watched at the Movie Theater, one of the few movies that got the 3D right.

I love when James makes videos like this, just him talking about things heโ€™s interested in. Itโ€™s refreshing

I remember really enjoying Avatar when I saw it in theaters, but somehow there's something really forgettable about it. I never heard of any of my friends rewatching Avatar, but I know plenty of people who have watched Titanic and other movies several times.

I'm really surprised you hadn't seen Dances With Wolves before this! Not being mean, just knowing how big a film buff you are it blew my mind. It's great that watching Avatar again got you to watch DWW and I'm glad you enjoyed it, definitely one of my favs!

Fantastic review. There's not much better than having repeated phrases corrected (clarified?) like this. Also, your friendly face, detailed research and calm demeanor really make it enjoyable. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

The idea of recycling ideas is like ET, The Iron Giant, and Lilo and Stitch having the same plot. They each do things differently and give you a different experience. That is why Mac and Me didn't work, it felt too similar to ET and that's why it didn't connect with people.

I can't believe we're at a point where Avatar is now considered nostalgic

I watched it on the big screen with all those amazing 3D effect and I loved it. When I rewatched it on the TV withoud 3D, it was just an okayish SciFi flick.

Avitar is a modern rendition of Dances with Wolves. But not a rip off. I dont think its a bad thing to use inspiration from older art. Music is just the same.

I remember everyone praising it initially. As the hype wore off, people started referring to it as 3D Pocahontas. Edit: I agree Fern Gully is more accurate. This was just a recollection of my own experiences.

I came to literally the exact conclusion you did. Was wondering if you were gonna get there. "Overhyped, not overrated."

It's refreshing to hear someone push back on the "Avatar is just a ripoff of (insert movie)!" nonsense. As James points out, criticizing Avatar for using familiar storytelling tropes is the ultimate double-standard. Other popular movies with generic stories don't get this treatment because they didn't destroy worldwide box office records while getting nominated for best picture. The goal of filmmakers isn't to come up with an "original" story, which is impossible at this point in film history, it's to effectively use the well-worn story devices we've all seen a thousand times.

Fun fact: Dark City and The Matrix shared some of the exact same sets. Both filmed on the same soundstage in Australia and The Matrix re-used some of the sets built for Dark City.

I was a bit bummed out that we lost a decade of James Cameron films just so we could have sequels to this.

The box office says people liked it. I loved it but I wasn't comparing it to movies I hadn't seen. Which seems to be the most consistent critique i see of Avatar. Oh it's so and so or so and so in space with blue monkeys.. I'm like alright cool, I'm still not ever going to see those movies and I'll keep on liking Avatar

Great video as usual! Talking about James Cameron, I would love to hear James reviewing Alita: Battle Angel (since the screenplay and production are Cameron's). I would rather a sequel from that movie than Avatar, but well I also liked Avatar.
