☞ Ólafur Arnalds

Icelandic composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Ólafur Arnalds explores the crossover from classical to pop by mixing chamber strings and piano with discreet electronics. In addition to forming the experimental techno duo Kiasmos with Janus Rasmussen, Arnalds has produced a magistral repertoire of spine-tingling neo-classical works and film scores since the late 2000s.

☞ About the location

Hafursey is a palagonite mountain located on the north side of Mýrdalssandur and near the Katla volcano in Iceland. The lonely Inselberg is surrounded by vast valleys of volcanic sand, sanders, glaciers, and waterfalls that render one of the most special, almost lunar sceneries in the world.

☞ About Hafursey (Yfir) by Ólafur Arnalds (Cercle Records)

« Yfir » ("Above") is a musical journey through Iceland's various moods and seasons. At times, the music swells with a powerful surge, mirroring the crashing waves against rocky cliffs or the thunderous roar of a distant volcano. Other moments evoke a sense of stillness and serenity, echoing the peacefulness found in secluded valleys and hidden fjords near the inselberg of Hafursey.

The song is the continuation of another track written by Ólafur, Undir: “We’ve been playing Undir for 5 years, and rearranged it every time for each set, changing every element one by one. Last year, we realized the latest version of Undir was not the same track that the one we originally composed! On the occasion of our Show with Cercle, I decided to take the track back to the studio, rearranging it especially for the Show to meet Cercle’s energy”.

While I was watching this, my boyfriend came home from work and told me "you're always listening to music that feels like I'm about to die." I laughed and realized that... yes. I do. This music makes me feel like I could die and it would still be okay. It makes me feel like I'm constantly trying to grasp the infinite wonder of this universe but I can never quite get there. It reminds me of how precious life on Earth really is. It makes me feel grief, awe, and hope, all at the same time. I love you Olafur and thank you so much for putting this together Cercle. <3

Gave birth to my baby daughter while this played in the background. The most serene and peaceful experience hearing those baby cries for the first time with this in the background. @olafurarnalds music will forever have a profound meaning for me now, thank you for giving us this gift!

I've been waiting for this one to happen ever since I first tuned into Cercle. I've seen him play live a couple of times and it's always a great experience, and seeing him play in an awesome place like this which is his home and which you can hear back in his music is amazing.

The greatest human minds have yet to define consciousness. Perhaps because words cannot express in its entirety. After listening to this, I’m starting to believe this is what consciousness is. It’s a language beyond words. It’s emotion + sound which equals music. It knows no bounds and can encapsulate multiple emotions simultaneously. It has the power to heal. The power to connect people from all over the world. It can make people weep and feel loved. This particular set has made me feel deeply understood. Thank you from the depths of my heart. ❤

It’s hard to express what Ólafur’s music does as a single feeling - somewhere between intense energy and complete relaxation. Somewhere between separating from reality and feeling closely connected. It has a way of conveying a powerful message, without using a single word. I really enjoy coming back to the live performances and seeing how the tracks evolve over time. Art which reflects the inpiration of the moment, rather than using it merely as a backdrop.

Honestly, dudes, this may be my favorite live musical performance of all time. Sending love and positive thoughts to Iceland. I'm in America thinking about all of you and wishing you safety, love, and happiness. I visited Iceland over this past summer and it was after a week in Ireland. I have never been outside North America until this trip and both places were magical to me in different ways. Because of the vast difference in tourism and commerilzation between the two areas, it created a stark contrast that has ever since resonated in my perspective. This song was a song I found during this trip, so I just want the creators of this piece to know how incredibly moved I am by this piece. This is incredible and you all should be so proud of yourselves for your ability to create music like this. WOWZERS DUDES!

The kind of visuals that reminds you that the world is a much bigger, beautiful and sacred place than we remember in our day to day... The kind of music that makes you smile, and know that you can be connected deeply without a single word... The kind of art that is needed to guide us properly forward... Just...thank you, everyone reading this, for making possible all of this 🙏🧡

Words can hardly express the profound impact Ólafur Arnalds' music has had on my life. During a time of unimaginable emotional loss, his compositions became the soundtrack to my healing journey. Each note, each melody, carried the weight of my grief and gently guided me through the darkest of times. Ólafur's ability to evoke raw emotions and convey the complexities of the human experience is simply astonishing. His compositions have this uncanny ability to speak directly to the soul, as if he understands the pain and sorrow we all carry within us. Through his music, I found solace, comfort, and a sense of connection that I thought was lost forever.

I am not sure why the first five minutes of this set completely tears me apart. I don't know if it is the sheer beauty of the violent, rugged beauty of the Islandic landscape, or the heavenly musical notes that I'm hearing. But it's absolutely AMAZING.
