On 26 April 1967, ITN reported from Faslane naval base in Scotland on the crew of HMS Valiant (S102), the first entirely British-built nuclear submarine to enter service in the Royal Navy. Having just spent three months at sea on a journey of 25,000 miles, Commander Peter Herbert, Valiant's commanding officer, invited ITN on board to inspect the sub. Herbert and others spoke of the challenges of spending so long underwater in cramped conditions, and shared a bit about what was learned on Valiant's maiden voyage. The report offers a fascinating insight into the cutting edge of Cold War Britain's naval defences, as well as every day life for those involved in the UK's preparations for the next major conflict.
